Psilocybe cyanescens from Belgium * 2

I found these in a mulched bed of ornamental grass, near the coast in the province of West-Flanders, Belgium. The same place where I found Leratiomyces ceres last week, but now I decided to take a look in between the ornamental grass, and sure enough, these bluing specimens caught my eye.



Had nothing to put them in, as it was a surprise find, luckily these mouthmasks came in handy.

I'm very happy... :tongue2: will take some prints, and put the stembutts and attached mycelium-laden chips on some cardboard, so I can give back to nature next year.

Leratiomyces ceres Is a good indicator species for cyans. They share the same habitat. The cyan patch I found last year had them growing nearby as well.

I found these in a different spot today. In fact it was in someone's front yard, passing by I noted a single wavy cap growing in a mixture of mulched woodchips and bark. A bit further I spotted a few other. The stems bruised blue quickly after handling them.



When I was taking pictures the lady owner came home. I told her that I was just a nature spotter, but she was very ill at ease. I apologized and moved on.

My experience show that bark mulch from conifers are fruiting later and with not so much shrooms, but they last for more years than hardwood.
When you got hardwood pieces you have one big year and they are ease up. Or if the place is bigger they are "walking" to another place.

While the biggest flushes I’ve seen were in a mix of hardwood mulch/conifer duff below some kind of conifer tree, I have never observed psilocybe mushrooms growing in bark mulch. I have observed an anomaly or two (like P. Allenii growing directly off of a dead tree stump), but never in bark l. Honestly, I haven’t really noticed any/few mushrooms at all that will propagate in bark mulch. The conifer duff does provide an annually renewable source of food for the mycelium, and allowed the formation of mycelial mat like 15cm deep. I definitely see that helping the formation of a strong patch that produces large flushes, but I haven’t heard of or witnessed any evidence (anecdotal or otherwise) about psilocybe’s growing on bark mulch.

Last week we've had night temperatures of 5-8°C, but next week light frost is expected.

I'm near the coast, temperatures are typically milder here. More inland, they all already have had mild frosts at night (-2-0°C) while here I'm even still finding ps. semilanceata.

A few years back we had a very mild winter, first frost only came in early januari, and I still found ps. cyanescens until the first week of januari.
Only once a decade we get a harsh winter, with snow and -10°C temperatures, where we can walk on the ice. It used to be more regular in the past, I remember when I was a kid we could go iceskating almost every year.
