But no, I don’t think someone who’s managed to hold on to power this long like Putin is under any illusion that Europe was going to let him steamroll Ukraine without a fight, considering that’s been Europe’s worst nightmare scenario for the past 80 years.

I don’t think they’re playing for a stalemate either, anymore than the west is. This is currently the amount of resources both sides have calculated are worth the fight here, perhaps that will change.

Like I said a month ago an overwhelming troop surge is the only thing that would break the Ukrainians and win the war. They simpley don't have it. I thought initially they were fucking up on purpose to rope a dope troop surge them but it seems as though they were just plain fucking up. Now too much time has passed. Even if they were to break thru the line the Ukrainians probably have a long string of defensive positions build behind them to displace to and continue their defense. Russians simply can't move thier Armour and artillery in a fast coordinated manner enough to knock these guys on thier heels. They tried during the initial invasion wave and it all turned to shit. We can only assume it would be much much worse now that ukraine has had enough time to prepare defenses. What would be an interesting but risky play from Ukraine would be to play into the russias brainless aggression and do what the Koreans did to us in the Korean War and let them take huge amount territory where you want them to and let them become tired and wayyy over extended then encircle them. But as it stands now i have a hard time coming up with any situations where russia decisively wins this war.
