Culture only varieties/phenos * 2
    #27837160 -

I know someone posted asking about everyone's favorite phenos the other day... sorry about the somewhat duplicate post, but I'm really curious about some of the varieties that are "culture only"..

I know that you can only grow enigma from a culture.. I was wondering what other culture only varieties there are. Have you grown any? Which are your favorites? Do you know how it originated, or what it's a cross of, etc.. Can you also include pictures?

Omni is an enigma like mutation that came from Melmak OG and it is a fucking beast and half. Enigma was slightly faster than it to colonize agar and grain but once in fruiting conditions Omni left it in the dust. A good two weeks faster and the "fruit" it put out is much sturdier. I grow using bottle tek and eventually get side pins once the top part has sucked enough out of the cake to create space. Enigma side pins bruise the moment they touch the side of the jar and turn into a disgusting black mess. Omni was fixing to bust my pp5 jars open.

Very cool! That's exactly the kind of information that I'm looking for :super:

I may have an opportunity to get a couple cultures, and I'm trying to avoid accidentally picking something that I could just grow myself starting from spores. Enigma and SN APE were basically the two I wanted/thought of right away.. so that's very useful info about omni & enigma..

I think I should expand on my OP and also ask:

If you could grow any culture only varieties, what would you pick?

I'm curious what do you mean by culture only? Like picking up a culture of enigma would mean what exactly? I know that things like APE do not drop spores so you would have to pick up some swabs, is that the same here or is there a level beyond that?

It's beyond that... im not an expert on the matter, but here's a very basic overview (more experienced cultivators may end up correcting mistakes in my explanation)

it's a trait that is cloned. So if you go back to spores, the odds are you will no longer have that specific trait... like enigma, if you started from spores you'd most likely end up with Tidal Wave. Or Starry Nite APE, you'd end up with APE or APE(R).. so in order to keep that specific pheno, you need to start with a live culture such as a mycelium culture on agar or a liquid culture.

That is actually the purpose of my post. I've got an opportunity to get a few live cultures, but I don't want to accidentally waste a pick on something that I can just grow from spores. So I'm looking for ideas of what cultures to look for.

Ahh I got you, this may be beyond the scope of the discussion, I am not too sure, but what makes taking from spores such a genetic lottery? How is the genetic material in the spores from the parent fruit so varied, whereas of course if you take some flesh and clone it you get the same genetics.

Regardless, I appreciate the response, I'm assuming obtaining these cultures can be a bit difficult!

Once again I'd like to give a disclaimer that I'm not even close to an expert on the topic.. so this is just a very basic overview, it's just a snapshot of my understanding on the topic and may contain errors

Mushrooms are a lot different from humans... we get traits from our 2 parents, and some recessive traits from grandparents, etc.. Mushrooms inherit traits from a lot more doners, idk the number but it's like 1000+, instead of just 2 parents... so when a mushroom drops spores, they contain genetic material and traits of more than just the parent donor...

Even if you wanted to, you can't take spores from enigma and I assume it's the same for that Omni mentioned too. Nowhere to take spores from.

Otherwise, they could eventually be a stabilised isolate through spores.

No worries, anything at all is a starting point haha. I'll read a bit more and see what I can learn, definitely an interesting little world.

Omni still throws regular fruit sometimes and they do produce spores. I might have misunderstood the person that gave me the culture but apparently you get the fin/blob mutant from these spores pretty regularly

I think Starry Night can be grown from spores. We'll see, I just put some to grain yesterday.

I'm pretty sure that's what 'stabilizing' a culture means. As in once it's stabilized you should be pretty sure to get a specific phenotype.

And I guess I'm just assuming that it's stable if people are selling it, I could be wrong.

Very interesting.. I didn't know that. That may actually help me narrow down my choices.

So I finally made my decision.. I changed my parameters a little and decided to go with a couple that aren't culture only, but they're really cool and I want them  getting SN APE, Enigma, and Phobos :dancer:

There was a cultivator on Reddit with the handle Kujo something that had isolated a fin-shaped, Omni type enigma type brainiac type mutation from True Albino Teachers that he had called Tat Too.  Donโ€™t know if they have ever been active here, or if they ever shared it with anyone, or if itโ€™s available anywhere. They were posting awesome pics and videos of the grows pretty regularly last year.

Some phenos like the โ€œstarry nightโ€ do appear from time to time in spores from specific lines. starting from spores collected from the desired pheno is still going to have different phenos show up and need to select youโ€™re  keepers from the fruits.
Mutants like enigma donโ€™t produce spores or other sterile โ€œsporelessโ€ strains are only able to be passed around in culture form, so on agar, LC, or grain samples/kits. Like elite clone only cuts in weed. Sure you can breed or even self the clone, but the resulting seeds are not going to be the same as the original.

This is TATtoo. It behaves very much like Eminga, has quite a bit more bruising throughout the grow though. The bruising is quite beautiful, it's like an ever changing Rorschach test. The users reddit handle is u/kujo-317, this is a picture of my grow though

On a related note, someone I know has regular fruit growing in their Enigma. They are still just pins so far but fingers crossed, I'll hopefully be first in line for a print
