Important distinction! Thanks for keeping it EZ Pasty! I know this thread is old and stuff but I love this tek.

But... some of us persnickity folks don't feel comfortable doing things without a solid "tek" lol. Last thing I need is "Why did my jars contam?" -> "Oh you turned them a 1/4?... that's why your jars are f$%^ed"...haha

This tek is basically how things were done before we had SFD’s. Honestly I’ve had far fewer fails from unmodded lids (zero) than I have with SFD’s (okay maybe a half dozen at most but more than zero). It’s maybe less forgiving in that you have to remember to tighten them up before you pick em up or try to avoid touching them a lot but, if you can do those things it’s a very solid method.

Hey there, sorry if it's bad manner to open an old post but I am also on the boat now of using unmodded lids. I got sick of the metal ones and rust, burrs, micropore tape getting gross, etc.. This works well so far.

Is this still a solid replacement in 2022? I never bothered with rtv and sfd and all that shit, and this is what I've been using and it's been decent. Just wanted to see what the benefit of the 1/4" hole with tape/rtv etc over this easier tek. Thx alot!

The only advantage that a filtered lid has over unmodded is you don’t need to worry about the lid being loosened when you put the jar back down or having to tighten it when you pick it up. But that small advantage aside I personally find that unmodded are better for the simple fact that there is no failure point from the filter itself. Filters can fail, even SFD filters can fail. If the filter gets wet it can also allow contams to literally grow through the filter into the jar. The other upside is you don’t need to worry about the filters falling off or failing in any other way as the filter ages.

Unmodded lids when used correctly are actually safer than filters IMO.

Thx for the quick response bud! Got some jars cookin up now. I loosen em up in the PC then when cooled I tighten them, take em out Noc em up and retighten.

After you spawn do you like to loosen for the whole duration? Or do you keep em tight until 30% or something? I wonder if it would fully colonize fully tight..

Unmodded lids are cool and all, that is till you get  Tyrophagus mites that ride in on a bag of grain and crawl into and infest every one of your grain jars, then have to bug bomb your house and start everything over from cold storage cultures…

But hey mite as well take the risk right?

:mitebecool:

I made the mistake of storing bags of grain in the same room as i was growing/incubating/doing lab work and had issues

I ended up modding all my lids and using silicone seals for a while. Took care of it

I don't believe this has been discussed yet unless I missed it but I have some plastic lids with removable rubber gaskets and was wondering if you think those gaskets should be used with the lids or not with this tek?

With this tek you don’t want the gasket. Save those for LC

I'm wondering the same thing. A quart jar filled to 3/4 with grain should have enough air in there to last the myc quite some time.

Feels like keeping them tight until the first shake at ~30% should be fine.

Anybody run some jars side to side with cracking the lids at different times to see if there's any difference?

It’s not so much that the mycelium needs O2 coming in as much as it needs the CO2 to bleed off. However it’s good that O2 comes in the same way that the CO2 bleeds off because some anaerobic species will thrive if the O2 levels drop too much.

Thanks Pasty, makes sense. I was going to leave the lids tight until first shake but I guess I'll crack them open now.

I cracked the lids (note to self, don't tighten them like a fucking gorilla next time) and the jars from Friday night  (very visible growth) hissed. I guess that is CO2 escaping? :tryingnottodie:

The jars from Sunday (just starting today to show some myc growing) did not hiss.

Really interesting.
