Wait, do you mean using the actual wood chips?

Most chips are mixed between different species, sometimes dozens, it would be pretty easy to ID a lot of commercial beauty bark, but in those cases it’s usually actually traceable.

Also they usually aren’t great for supporting mushroom or other fungal growth, in fact that’s the main selling point.

Exactly, im seeing a new trend in a fungi proof mulch. I'll start posting some photos so any experts can start helping ID what's what. All in an effort to save people time.

Most of the mulch beds here in Ireland are those bark chip mulch beds which don't support actives for sure, but I find they're great hunting grounds for morels if you're interested in that, especially newly laid beds, no more than a couple of years old.

My experience is that the cyanescens group will grow on just about anything, wood though. Bark + wood is fine, but on pure bark they are rare.

Sure, some woods are better than others, but it's no big deal.

Any blend of species I consider to be a good thing.

Yes really any blend, and most individual species chips, although some particularly fragrant conifers definitely do better after they have sat out and/or been rained on for awhile, so that the compounds responsible have had time to break down or dissipate.
I have had a bit of luck with morels in the bark bits too. I find it more likely that I will find species of Ascomycota, in general, growing in/on it than Basidiomycota.
Where I live in the Pacific Northwest, there has been a move away from beauty  bark, outside of commercial settings which value a sanitary aesthetic, over environmental health and a more natural look.

Near area with cyans. Municipal mulch for a mitigation zone. It's been raining for 30 days straight, it's wet. N.Seattle

Are you looking for an ID? There is a lot of Douglas fir bark in that mix of lord only knows how many species.

Having had several trees removed, chipped, and hauled away - contractors don't make any effort to segregate different types of trees.  Chips is chips if you're a municipality or business getting a multiple yards delivered for landscaping.  Around here it seems to be a mix of Doug fir and fast-growing trash trees like vine maple and alder.

I've worked for arborist companies on and off for the past decade and can confirm we do not separate chips.  If you are using chip drop you are getting a random mix of what is in your area.  Depending on the crew you're likely to get human waste as well.  There's no bathrooms available for us so we sometimes have to jump in the back of the truck and "inspect the chips". If you don't like it, advocate your local city council to put in an adequate amount of public bathrooms.  We don't make enough money to haul around a bathroom truck with us.

You may be able to source single species chips from local landscape supply companies.

Chip species can actually be easier to identify than you think.  If you're experienced with trees, they have distinct smells.  For a more beginner approach look for chunks of chips with the bark still attached and compare it to species in your area or well known ornamentals.  Are there needles mixed in with the chips, bits of shredded broadleafs?  Are they complete enough to help identify the species?  Between scraps of bark, wood smell/color, needles, and leaves you could get a good idea of at least the genus of the trees in the mix.

IME woodloving species like cyans will eat up just about anything with the exclusion of cedar and cypress.  The presence of those two in a chip mix will not stop mycelium from colonizing, but if it's purely them it won't happen.  As mentioned above the chips need to be wood and not bark chunks or shredded beauty bark.  Woodlovers appear to prefer slightly aged chips to fresh.  I find the most voracious patches in 1-2 year old chip beds.
