ID required for Melbourne find
    #2749063 -

Im a newbie to identifying mushrooms and need some help with my latest find. I live in Melbourne Australia ten km west of the city.Today I was looking for my house key where it usually hides under some bark chips and i came across twenty or so of these little fellers growing in the dirt. They are only babies but I chose to pick them as it was warm and sunny all day today and didnt know if they would survive. The biggest one is 2cm tall with a cap size of about 8mm. They haven't bruised after an hour. They have a pleasant mushroomy smell and their stout little stalks were strong and stayed intact when I picked them.

If they haven't bruised after an hour, then no they aren't psilocybes. But they are way too small to make an ID on and if you found Psilocybes you picked them too early to let them do anything to you. Let em grow up and spread their shit man.

Peace - @cro

Thanks for your reply. Do you think even though it is overly sunny and they were starting to shrivel up and die I should still leave them?

Those mushrooms look like subs. The caps are especially similair in this photo here which is typical in young specimens
However the caps seem a little too red for subs. Should definately blue a little bit if they are subs after handling. Look very closesly on the stem sometimes the blue may be faint. Take a sporeprint and see if it turns purple or dark purple

Hey now mang, don't go saying "they look like subbs" if you're not sure. Especially with mushrooms that grow on woodchips, that could result in a death because Galerians love woodchips.

Checkity check yo self befo you wreck yo self.

hmm they look a little like stropharia aurentica (sp?)

the redness in the cap makes me think they are not subs. Does the stem bruise a red-brown colour when you rub it? if so it is the above species.

The mushrooms are a little small to make a decent ID though :yesnod:

Yes the stems have red/brown marks on them and they were growing in the dirt under bark chips not on them. Thanks for your help

They look a LOT like Stropharia Aurentiaca.

Still bigger mushrooms would be needed to be sure.

Here is a photograph of some Stropharia arantiaca.

And Foesome reason the sub picture shows up yellow cps on my screen.

And I do not think those are stropharia arantiaca.

HEre is one image.

And if it is yellow looking then it may be Stropharia coronilla.

Yep stroph' auratiaca I'd say, everywhere in Melbourne at the moment, seems to cope well with 'dryish' conditions ... subs that small/ supple would have had some blue evident on the stalk even while growing, and really blue up after picking ('looks' like they where picked very gently though!) I'd say. I notice some distinct yellow on the stalks of many young strophs I find aroun Melbourne (never seen on subby stalks), I think I see hints of that in some of your shrooms in the pics but cannae be sure...

Stroph are classic subby look-alikes though, can only really tell them from subs by colour (redder caps, possibly some yellow on stalk, no bluing) when they're young, cause the morphology is identical.

If they had been subs, I woulda' left them there for a while longer given that they look decently hydrated/ coulda' grown more, but I disagree that subs that small 'wouldn't do anything to you...'. They're potent little guys...
Here's a pic of stroph I have on the server...

Heya Suboriginal.

Thanks for your ID expertise. Yes I think they are Stroph' Auratiaca as they did have yellow/brown staining of the stalks. I should have let the grow but I was so excited as this was the first time I have come across anything in Oz that resembled a Sub. The only time I have had great mushrooms was when I living in the ski resort of Vail, Colorado USA... my boyfriend at the time worked in a pizza shop and use to put them on my pizza when I went in for dinner! Im hanging to find a patch here in Melbs. Fingers crossed my friend and I are lucky tomorrow.

Tip of the day. Think twice before having mushies the night before an overseas trip..especially when you havent packed yet! I packed four jumpers and a snow jacket to go to New Orleans (similar climate to Queensland!). Go the happy camper! lol
