It’s just amazing that someone would think the statement “the fastest way to end the pandemic is to ensure vaccines are available to everyone, everywhere,” suggests the end goal is to isnt to vaccinate EVERYONE. Having vaccines available to everyone means having enough supply to get everyone vaccinated. Not 70%. 100%

What the fuck does he think everyone means?

The WHO sets goals. First it was 10% then they announced 40% by the end of this year. Recently they set a target for 70% by the middle of 2020. At some point they will announce another target. Maybe 90% by the end of 2022.

The reason you set targets like this is to promote equity. If you say the the target by the end of 2022 is 100%, then countries will try to reach 100% as soon as possible. They don’t want countries going for 100% yet. They want counties to secure doses for 40% so there’s enough for everyone to get to 40%. Then everyone can get enough doses to get to 70%. Then there will be another target set. These tiered goals help keep supply evenly distributed.

It’s the same exact thing that happened when the vaccines were rolled out here. First it was healthcare and old people. Then first responders. Then 66+. Then 50. Then everyone. Just because they didn’t want 25 year olds getting vaccinated in January, didn’t mean that 25 year olds wouldn’t be part of the vaccine strategy

Does he think the WHO is gonna stop and say ok that’s enough at 70%

jNY state has a lot of data on breakthrough cases. They give estimated vaccine efficacy based in actual cases every week. It’s really interesting how efficacy dropped significantly early on, but then stabilized. You can also see the effects of boosters in the older age groups in the past few months where efficacy starts going back up.

I can’t figure out why older people have an apparently higher efficacy rate. Maybe behavioral differences? Vaccinated older people are probably more careful about protecting themselves than unvaccinated?

Anyways, you can really see the drop in efficacy in the last row, except the 65+ Age group which is showing the highest level of efficacy that group has seen. The boosters may be doing a really good job of preventing omicron infections, but behavioral changes are a cofounding factor.

No change in efficacy preventing hospitalization at all. It’s remarkably stable for the past six months.

Yeah.

Although it’s possible at some point you have to get a booster for the J&J to be considered fully vaccinated. The j&j is a subpar vaccine which uses a viral vector to place dna into your cell nucleus to make mRNA that makes the spike protein.

Why not get the more effective mRNA vaccine that doesn’t interact with your cell nucleus. All the vaccines create the spike protein from mRNA (as does the virus itself), the mRNA vaccines use premade mRNA. The others use dna to make mRNA

The J&J does offer the advantage of not having to wait five weeks to be fully vaccinated.

The current vaccines are much closer to all the other variants than an omicron vaccine would be. We need to be suppressing the dangerous variants and not worry about the one outlier that’s going to burn itsself out in a month.

Chasing variants with the vaccines is a folly. If we had changed the vaccines for delta, we’d be even further away from omicron immunity. Over time you develop the capability to make antibodies for all the possible variants regardless of the original antigen. We just need to get everyone vaccinated with the current vaccines and then we stop giving a fuck about covid.
