The concept of snorkeling freaks me out more. Always having to pay attention to where the top of the thing is or else you're suddenly choking on water.

I have tried and failed to use a snorkel on several occasions.

I didn't have the force of breath to clear the snorkel of water while diving so that was no use and attempting to just use it on the surface... Isn't that hard but I'm dumb.

Can't decide if my fear of drowning comes from that or the fact that I was taught to swim by being thrown in water over my head.

Probably that you were taught to swim by getting tossed in. That'll definitely do it. I've always been a bit of a fish and was even a water birth, but my parents had my brother and I in swimming lessons as soon as humanly possible - my brother's now doing the same thing with his 1 year old and has been with the 3 year old since he was the same age. It has to be done right though, kids are super impressionable - my roommate's 2 year old has a huge fear of swimming now because she got introduced a bit too fast I think.

I also fucked up with my roommate and introduced her to snorkeling a bit too fast for her swimming level. We went down to the keys, and I tried to introduce her slowly to it in shallow bays before she went out on an actual trip with me. It was choppy, the depth was 40 feet which, unless you're keen to dive down, can be hard to see things, there were these giant purple jellies everywhere(I felt like I was in a video game dodging those suckers, actually), and there was a tiger shark that showed up as the final clincher that sent her flopping like a panicked dying fish back to the boat .

It's not for everyone, but I think it's pretty much crucial to be introduced to it in the right time and place. That was my bad. I dove at the reef we went to a bunch and it seems like such a shallow and friendly place, and it is for divers - but for someone just being introduced to snorkeling..not so much.

sign me up pls

I need to experience that, sounds so fun. It must be such a rush. My swimming skills are poopy cause I haven't been in the water in years but its like riding a bike and was decent at diving I think. I just wonder how my body would react to the pressure.

I love it, it's simultaneously exciting and yet very zen for me. And the fins, really really help substantially, particularly in calm water.

And that's an interesting thought about the pressure. Interestingly enough I'm very sensitive to barometric pressure(migraines), and at one point I was down in FL while Hurricane Sandy was hitting up North - the low pressure system was unreal, and even though it was sunny skies in FL, the migraines I got that week were unreal. I have never been in such consistent pain like that, ever. I still decided to try and dive, and as soon as I got under water and the pressure increased, the migraines went away! As soon as I'd surface, they'd come back.

It was pretty amazing and it makes me wonder how you might do underwater. If you find your pain increases with low pressure systems, then you may actually get some reprieve underwater :strokebeard:

Oh wow yeah that makes sense. Thats it, I guess I just have to become the mermaid I was always meant to be. They do sell professional tails...  :strokebeard3:

It sounds like us migraine sufferers should just live permanently underwater then

Also salt water does amazing things for my hair and skin. I miss it so much. My skin is always at its best when I'm constantly in the ocean.

So sorry you had to deal with that pits of hell migraine. I know that pain first hand, I literally forgot that I've had a few that have lasted weeks in the last decade. My brain just wiped it from recent memory. Brain trying to protect me from trauma :sadyes:

I may have mentioned it to you or someone else before, but  try gabapentin if you havent. I used to get really bad migraines that woud make me throw up and damn near hallucinate, but when I started taking 300mg gabapentin morning and night, they stopped entirely. For years i havent had one. Used to get em like, couple times a month.

Luckily it hasn't been much of an issue since I've been locked down. I was supposed to get in to see a neurologist on a regular basis after several tests(and fuck tons of new medical debt now. No deductible my ass) but that's been put off. My last one was in early March and I ended up in urgent care - they gave me a big fat shot in the buttcheek of toradol and anti-nausea meds and it really worked well.

UNfortunately it also caused extreme stomach pain for me(it's basically a supercharged NSAID) which I'd rather take than a migraine, but it's not a good long term solution. I've also been on a few different meds for migraines in the past - one was an anti-seizure that turned me into a zombie, the other was a blood pressure medication but I have low blood pressure as is and I ended up in the hospital after passing out in a CVS, the other was a fast acting nasal spray but it's effectiveness was limited if I didn't sense that I was getting a migraine and administer it like right away.

But so far I'm alright lately . Which is good because I was getting lots of headaches and some concerning neurological symptoms repeatedly over the winter.

So far it seems like it was almost completely related to stress. But since I've been under stay at home orders, and work is a little bit more chill at the moment..nothin'.

I cant help but think that the anomoly of your mis-matched irises is a sign of the times, Chaotic, unpredicted, 20/20 eye mishap in the year 2020. The timing ia just too weird.

Im enjoying the Scuba talk. Ive done Scuba diving about 4 times in Hawaii when i lived there. Its soooo much fun. I loved it. I do kinda get a semi-panic attack being so deep underwater with only a tank of air to keep me alive. Kinda scary BUT so worth it to do. Its like an Underwater playground to observe and enjoy.

Perhaps! Weirdly enough the eye thing has not happened since, thankgod. Sometimes I do still stare 'em down in the mirror when I'm getting paranoid.

Hawaii is an absolute dream. I'd absolutely love to get out that way. Ever do that awesome looking Manta Ray night dive? I think it's in like a super busy area off The Big Island(? maybe?) and it's just amazing to me that something like that still exists right in a major population center. Absolutely awe-inspiring.

It's so expensive to get out there from the East Coast though :okay:. I'll probably sooner head back to Mexico and/or California. My childhood friend's dad opened up what looks like an amazing bed and breakfast in the Yucatan with his husband, and said he'd cut me a good deal if I wanted to head down that way.

Yucatan diving would be mind blowing! :mindblown:

I once snorkled near a spot at sunset that had Manta Rays on the Big Island. I saw one in the corner of my eye, thought it was a shark. Freaked me out! But looked closer and it was a Manta Ray. I was about 30 ft from it or so. One of the most surreal experiences of my life watching that Manta Ray feed in these graceful figure-8 loops. It was an amazing sight.

If i lived East Coast, Id probably fly to the Bahamas. I bet theres still some epic coral diving there.

That's amazing! I've encountered a lot of rays, but never a Manta. They seem larger than life, and I totally don't blame you for being startled . What an experience, though.

There is a lot of really interesting stuff in the bahamas - a huge Barrier reef, a massive blue hole(Dean's Blue Hole), lots of sharks! The coral down there has taken a bit of a beating - and I think even more so now after Hurricanes last year, but unfortunately I think that can be said for most places. I think there's supposed to be some pretty amazing cave systems there too, but that's not really my jam. The Caribbean is very easy to get to in general from the East Coast and there are just endless islands to explore all with some very unique colonial history to boot.

And yeah, the Yucatan is a special, special place. The food, the people, the diving, the scenery - all world class.

Anyway y'all, I'm going go try and fit in a good 5 mile hike with the pup now that the sun has come out and I'm officially off the clock. I've been sitting on my ass infront of a laptop all day and have to get the blood pumping a bit. :peace::peace::peace:

I'm looking forward to seeing some of those islands.

Went on a straight 4 hour bike ride.
It was fun. My whole body feels it.
Saved up some, raw chocolate tastes good.

Pandemic or not I almost never see anyone outside so it's cool.

And yes, Manta Rays are epic. Truly amazing creatures.

I gotta make it back to the Yucatan. Went there with my Dad as a teen. One of the best vacarion ever.

Enjoy that hike! Weather in Oregon has been divine lately. Really special. I love Spring :awesome:

Near Dylan said:

That's how migraines are for me.

I don't puke every-time, but there is usually some nausea and sometimes they do build up to the point that I puke . It feels very "serotonergic" to me. Like the way the nausea and other neurological-mind-fuckery of the migraine builds up in intensity and "peaks" with me puking feels quite similar to the times I've puked from MDMA and serotonergic psychedelics, just the way that type of nausea feels and the way it builds up in intensity is similar.

After I puke during a migraine, the puking is basically like the "peak" of the migraine and things start to subside after that (tho slowly).

And migraines certainly alter my visual perception...everything is ultra bright and glowing/gleaming, and I seem to have more after images/tracers than normal.

All around migraines just make all incoming sensory stimulus for me incredibly painful and disorienting, any light or motion/movement in my field of view is super intense and painful and nauseating and kinda makes me dizzy, sounds are painful and nauseating, aromas become super intense and very foul/disgusting smelling and very nauseating (even smells I love), sound pounds into my head and across my body.....All I can do is lay down in a dark room with a cold rag across my head and ear plugs in my ears. I try to get as stoned as possible when they get bad, the herb doesn't make the pain of the headache go away or "cure" the symptoms of the migraine, but it helps to just lay there and "veg" out and become as relaxed as possible.

Sometimes I don't get a full blown migraine, but for several days or a week or more I will feel what feels like a lingering migraine and a super cloudy head space. It becomes difficult to focus on things visually, I notice my eyes dart around a lot more.

I notice migraines affect my ability to focus and fuck with my emotions/feels too.

All around they just fuck me up. I've been meaning to take a small dose of mushrooms the next time I feel a gnarly one coming on, as I've heard from a handful of folks that mention mushrooms (or LSD) helps a lot with migraines. (Tho once before I did have a full on migraine that developed during a LSD trip, it was one of the most miserable trips and days of my life...not sure if it was the L that triggered it or not, but it was fucking terrible).

I get them probably about once a month, sometime more often sometime less...Sometime I feel like I'm stuck in a perpetual migraine.

Hey everyone hope yall are well.

Man ive had a couple of good days.
Riding out the end of this quarantine. Was listening to This Amer Life podcast from Monday they were talking about how this time that the quarantine has forced couples to spend together. Surely has tested alot of peoples relationships. Some fore the worse but for me it has worken out for the better. :dancer: I usually work alot and dont get as much time with my lady. Before this there was some distance between us. I picture that if we wouldnt have bonded over this past month as we have that we may have went another year and then split.

So i hope everyone is getting along nice with family and loved ones in these trying times.

I tripped Sunday and had such a spledid time im planning on having an expeirence with the lady tonight but was concerned about tolerance. There has been a day between and i have fast metabolism but im curious to see how it effects me.
