IIRC they are a color morph of the gray squirrel, not sure why the black coloration predominates here. Better heat absorption from sunlight in winter maybe?

Squirrels in general are really territorial I guess they leave eating their neighbor's squirrel babies just to get them to fuck off

I dont think black squirrels used to be so prevalent down here... It was probably a cultural thing. Perhaps they were hunted more?

Black squirrels IMO are more loners and more territorial. They move a lot, more jittery.

Yeah the are definitely super jittery IME. Can't imagine it's achieving them anything to just sprint back and forth all fucking day, they are just wired up.

I always thought the sound they make was birds until I saw them screeching, lol. SE OK has black squirrels, and I've seen an albino too.

A cool variant you rarely see here are black ones with white on the tip of the tail so they look a bit like mini skunks.

ive only seen black ground squirrels way up n in ak are you talking ground squirrells or tree squrllies?

you guys got the flying squurrels over there too?

Squirrels are like stressed out little cats on meth

There's a lady in Boston common who's friends with them. She has names for all of them, they come right up to her and will sit on her lap while she feeds them. They come when she calls their name. I want to eat acid and play with squirrels with her this summer

I am in the Toronto area. The black squirrels definitely spend a bunch of time in trees. The gray ones here are I believe the same species, less common but not rare by any means.

We also have red squirrels, a bit bigger than a chipmunk. Not too sure about flying squirrels. Saw something that looked like it might be one when camping not all that far from here this summer, but didn't check into specifics.

i totally believed i had hallucinated for a year or two after the first time i saw the flyers. one flew right in front of my face while i was hunting and i couldnt figure out wtf was happening. had no idea they existed in that area

no it wouldn't. ill never forget that logging road. definitely one of the pivotal moments nothings the same but somehow nothing really changed either

Logging road? Did you do any forestry related work by chance? I used to plant trees and did a bit of forest surveying, really miss that stuff.
