Damien's Tek not enough?
    #26185618 -

Hey does anyone find that damion5050 Tek doesn't produce enough substrate for your monotub? Like for instance I'm using a 66 qt Sterlite and if I want a depth of 4 inches then 2 qts of verm mixed with 4 qts of water and 1 brick of Coco coir won't get it there.

I am going to try to multiply everything by 1.5 and instead do 3 qts of verm mixed with 6 qts of water and 1.5 bricks of Coco coir to keep the ratio the same. Anyone else do this or think there is a problem with this? Thanks!

What size tub you using?  It doesn’t necessarily have to be 4”

Edit:  66qt I see, should be enough substrate

It's enough. Your 4 inch goal is totally arbitrary.

You can use a standard bucket tek recipie in a 66qt or a 56qt, anything around there is fine.

The container is about 20" by 14" and even after mixing in 8 jars of spawn I don't reach a depth of 4" with just the standard recipe.

I thought it was popularly held that a 4" depth to your monotub does the best?

No that's BS.

All I ever use in a monotub is 4qts of spawn to a standard bucket tek recipe.

Erase the idea of it needing to be exact in terms of height, think ratio (roughly is okay).

Bucket tek comes out to be about 8-10qts substrate. 4 quarts of spawn, call it a 1:2 ratio - more than enough.

Some people use 5 or 6qts of spawn, I use 4 cause it's enough. Would rather make another tub up with the extra (more spread risk).

I have thinner subs. I don't worry about thickness as long as my ratio is decent.

I think the only time thickness matters is with pans

The only time ive ever worried about thickness with cubes is for doing novelty grows in tiny containers that can't hold much substrate

Do you have a problem with throwing in more spawn? I.E. something closer to a 1:1 ratio?

No, but unless you have a reason to do so, why not go for 1:2?

4" is pretty thick imo.

But you can increase the amount of everything in a bucket tek by 1.5

As I understand, the possible downside to a 1:1 ratio is the lack of proper maintenance of field capacity. It's often considered a waste in terms of nutrient : water (grain spawn : substrate) because you have all this potential in your nutrients but not the right conditions to utilize it.
Just like the brainy pothead - It's plenty effective, just doesn't reach it's full potential.

Where did that come from? Ive never heard that before, but that sounds odd. Field capacity is how hydrated your bulk sub is before mixing and of course as it colonizes and fruits your gonna lose water. So im confused what you mean

Field capacity - Content of water, on a mass or volume basis, remaining in a soil after being saturated with water and after free drainage is negligible.

Field capacity doesn't just stop when you add spawn.

I see what you mean but for the sake of measurement and practicality DnDRnD is right.

no, probably just unnecessarily using up good spawn.  I think that's what he meant.

So are you suggesting I ditch the idea of doing just one (or a few) fairly large (66 qt) monotubs and instead do a bunch of smaller ones?

Re: Damien's Tek not enough? [Re: SawCeeJack]

For the sake of practical measures, please elaborate as to how my use of the term 'maintenance of field capacity' is impractical and how dndrnd is right in saying that 'field capacity is how hydrated your bulk sub is before mixing'.
That statement is not only impractical, it is wrong. What do you think misting is? Just adding water? Or is it a way to once again achieve field capacity? And what maintains field capacity? Your misting? And how do things grow well? By replacing lost water, no matter how excessive?
