Democracy
    #2596621 - 04/23/04 10:45 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

The US govt and US citizens seem to believe that any govt other then democracy is bad. Isn't the US's biggest ally GB and if so isn't GB a monarchy?

So how can the US be so idotic in denouncing other govts but by acts approve of a monarchy?

btw I don't approve or dissaprove of any govt. As a true US citizen I feel it should not be controlled by one govt. If the country decides on a monarchy, theocracy, democracy or otherwise that's up to them.

Britain's monarchy has no real power anymore, and hasn't had any for quite some time. They're just figureheads who make good tabloid headlines. The real power in England is in the Parliament, which I'm fairly sure is democratically elected.

If that is true then that's an intersting piece of information.

But more importantly what makes the United States think that the only good form of government is a democracy. And above that what makes the United States feel they have to enforce their beliefs?

Because the idea of the people being in charge is appealing to people. I don't see how this profits the government though, as they don't really look out for what's good, but what's best for them.

My guess is they believe if they set up a stable democracy, the people will thank them and then want to ally and help the US. Probably what they're trying to do in Iraq (though it's failing rather miserably.)

"Democracy is the worst form of government on earth, except everything else" - Churchhill (Thats a paraphrase, don't quote me on it!)

I think that a government run "by and for" the people is the best one possible. What do you think would be a better system?

Why do we have to 'enforce' our beliefs? Because the powers that be don't belive it's moral to sit back and enjoy freedom and watch the rest of, or parts of, the world suffer in abject poverty and oppression.

US doesn't give a fuck what government a country has as long as the government takes care of the people. Kuwait has a monarchy but they do whatever makes the people happy.

Ummm...no. The US will tolerate any government that supports the US pro-business agenda and our will to empire. The US administration doesn't give a flying fuck what those governments do to their people. Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Egypt, etc., etc. All this talk about freedom, democracy and "the Iraqi people" is just window-dressing.

We are not a true democracy, btw. We're a republic. In a true democracy, we would not elect surrogates to represent us in congress; we would vote on each issue ourselves. Don't they teach civics in high school anymore?

Ahha finally someone who has some sense. A democracy is one of the most unruly forms of government known to man. That is the reason our forefathers created a constitutionally limited republic. So the original question is invalid since America doesnt technically support democracy as the most favorable form of government.

The people aren't in charge. They elect "leaders" every few years who "promise" to do a few things that get a LOT of media attention. The "leaders" then go on to ignore most of their "promises", write a few big-media laws, and quietly sign many many other laws that get no media attention...but are sponsered by big business.

Let me quote one historic document:

The result is that today's democratic order is, in its essence, equally democratic as the DDR or Saddam's regime. The difference between those regimes may reside in the degree of open manipulation and repression. However, from the point of view of quality - dictatorship, one-party system and oligarchy are the same, since the real power does not belong to the people, but to the few members of the elite.
