The importance of expressing dissapointment with aspects of life. * 1

This is a bit of a follow on from my most recent thread, it's a different angle on that sort of thing though so I wanted to create a second topic for it.

I've noticed that many people seem to dislike and shout down any criticism or expression of disappointment over any inherent qualities life possesses. If it weren't for the fact that many of the greatest modern thinkers had seen fit to take the trouble to give expression to disappointment over the ways that life seems to them in some ways inherently and fundamentally flawed I'd feel at least a little crazy and alone in my own feelings towards it. Fortunately a great many of those people have indeed seen fit to do so, in fact I would say it's probably more of them than not.

What is the value I see in this expression? I suppose it might be merely knowing that there are others out there who feel the same way. Or maybe it's just that any quality in life seems worthy of expression in search of a complete picture. Icelander used to say "misery loves company" but I don't know that I agree that that's where the value in it is to be found.

I have to wonder why people dislike this form of expression so much. What gives? It often seems to me like some strange need to tow the party line for god. Are people afraid that they'll get depressed by it and that others will too? Are there any of those of us here that really see little to no value in it? Do you see value in it?

Of course complaining about it is not the Buddhist solution. Which is interesting, but not simple.

As biology always seems an interesting way to consider subjects when possible.

Maybe people avoid expressing disappointment because life is such a downer already that they don't want to add to that.

I know I sometimes avoid things that bring me down because I'd rather not be brought down when I could be happy instead.

But I think expressing disappointment is probably healthier than bottling it up if done in moderation.

But as you say, Grapefruit, much great literature involves the dark side. And going back in time, even western civilization, had public hangings and beheadings. And the original Grimm's fairy tales were grimmer.

Now a days much money is made from family entertainment, so Disney cleans up Nature.
And like wise what's on TV, wants to appeal to kids. Follow the money.

The news loves accidents and murders, but not starvation, or camps of displaced people from african wars. And after, what showing too much of the actual of effects war, did to the popularity of the Vietnam war, of course they went from that realism, to "embedding" aka censoring, the war footage in Iraq & Afghanistan - Its a "Brave New World" what censorship doesn't fix, prozac will.

not everything is positive,
to keep it together you have to kvetch sometimes, to telegraph pain, so that maybe relief will be dispatched, or at least commiseration, which is a kind of bonding.

I do not prefer to hear the same story over and over but that could be about things other than disappointment, so repetition is more of a drag than disappointment stories themselves.

Failure to accept how things are is part of what motivates humans to change themselves, others and the environment... for better or worse.

But yea, Easter Bunny and Santa aren't real. Lots of things aren't as we imagined they would be as a child and much of that fantasy was installed through parents, culture, being sheltered, etc. There would be no disappointment if things were always as they seemed.

I have a 10 year old niece who still believes in Santa. I remember my other niece learning Santa wasn't real when she was about 8. She cried and asked "what about the Easter Bunny?" Mom shook her head... more crying.

To notice what is wrong, is fine (as the OP suggests)
but if one stays in the complaining state
and fails to take the next steps
of planing & action
one generally  becomes part of the problem.

What may seem like complaining,
may take the form of creatively publicizing an issue,
in hopes that if enough people are aware of an issue
action will be taken,
sometimes this works
and
sometimes it doesn't.

Within oneself,
"the critical self"
or self criticism
often hampers creativity,
on the other hand
over confidence often leads to disaster.

So making up general rules,
often is of little help.

To fully acknowledge that which disappointments us is to become open to what we care deeply about and our vulnerability. That includes us being disappointed in ourselves . . . It can be an unhealthy habit, for example, to become disappointed each time a driver cuts us off on the road. Or to become disappointed every time we make a mistake.
