cakes fruiting at different rates (slowly)
    #26108077 -

My first grow I had 12 cakes in two FC's. They all fruited but very slowly and at different rates. I'd have one cake produce a bunch of shroomies while 11 other cakes just sat. Over the course of several months they all fruited a little here a little there. Slowly they started to die, rot, get moldy and I'd throw them out one at a time..  The entire process produced maybe 20g dry over a few months.

This time, I'm trying it directly in jars... looks like the same thing is happening. Two jars are fruiting, others just sitting... All prepared the same way and all inoculated from the same syringe.

Why do you suppose this is happening.. What could I do differently to get them all to flush a bunch at the same time?

Rather than using spores and having hundreds of strains in each cake use the same genetics/culture for all the jars.

from spores they are all different cultures. so they perform wildly different. to get consistent performance, you will want to grow a culture on agar before inoculating substrates with it.

This is why people clone. If you clone the fastest grower for example you can get better results than just using spores :mushroom2:

Hmmm, i got the original syringe from online and ive made a few syringes from my own prints.. but i didnt realize that spores would be so diverse. Ill have to read about cloning.

Syringe cakes are fine, but sure if you want to get more serious go ahead :bigblunt: it's worth it imo

So, I don't have a lot of fancy equipment like a flow/still air box etc.. Honestly, the wifey can't tolerate much more of my "hobby" hehe. Mostly because we have a very small living space and limited budget.

but anyway, I've been using my oven on at 220 to inoculate and act as a flow box. So far, it's worked in that capacity (with spore prints) an no contams.

But for an experiment in liquid culture, I made a jar of honey water (4% honey by weight). I used a 1/2 pint bell jar with a single nail hole covered in medical tape. I did 90 min steam just like any jar and waited for it to cool over night.

In as clean a manner as I could I harvested the biggest fattest, fastest growing shroomy I could. I cleaned everything with Alcohol 70%. I attempted to use a sterile syringe to take a core sample, but in a practice run, I found that the syringe wouldn't pick anything up. It just cuts through it. So I flame sterilized an exacto blade. Over the oven and with latex gloves I broke the stem open and exposed the inside. I quickly took the blade and scraped a bit from the center. I carefully cracked open the honey water jar (about 1cm) and tapped the blade letting a small chunk of delicious and hopefully sterile shroomy tissue drop into the solution and closed it all back up.

It's sitting on my shelf to inoculate for 10 days. Hopefully, this will work and create a master LC that I'll turn around and attempt to inoculate with. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks, let me know if any of you have any thoughts/ideas/concerns with what I've done or trying to do.

It takes 350F two hours to dry heat sterilize. There is nothing clean about a 220f oven it actually helps pull contaminants in as heat rises air flows up off your super dirty floor.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_heat_sterilization

Your LC has a 95% chance of being bad with your method. Spores to LC is already a at best 50/50 chance of fail. Spores to LC with no sterile technique I would be extremely surprised if it worked well.

Spores to LC is just an extra step, extra time, extra contamination vector.

A Still air box is fancy equipment? Just get a 5$ plastic bin to put all your myco-related paraphernalia in. Cut/melt a pair of holes in the front and it doubles as a SAB

Exactly. If you use it cleverly its not even taking space.

So, I'm not using the oven as sterilizer, but rather to create an updraft where i work on the oven rack. This is a substitute for a still air and so far its worked for 20 or 30 innocs. My LC got more.and more small chunks of mushroom but i forgot to trap a marble, so i flame sterilized a few paper clips and inserted them quickly. I then used magnets to break things up. So far it has been visually fine although i understand its not always possible to see contamination in a LC. After 15 days, i inoculated 5 1/2 pint BRF's and another 500ml honey water (to see if i can make more innoculent. Time will tell. I'll post a few pics here.

Here is the master created from one tint piece of the center of a big fat strong mushy as described above. This is about 15 days.

And this is the secondary innoculent i just created from the master. I'll post whatever happens with the BRF cakes.. a bunch of green bullshit? We'll see eh?

I do have a question for any of you that use LC. Is there any harm (mutation?) From creating LC from LC from LC? Should i keep the master and make new LC from it and use those for cakes? My new LC has marbles so inwas thinking of using up the master on cakes and keeping the new one long term.

This is my master LC. When i pulled syringes i wasnt getting many chunks so i really used up a lot just to innov 5 cakes. I probably didnt need to use so much but i think using more makes it go faster. These cakes are growing fast!

Thanks guys.. im having a lot of fun!
