i've always thought Antarctica is the lost continent of Atlantis, its secrets lying beneath the ice.

the Piri Re'is map compiled in 1513 depicts Antarctica three centuries before it was "discovered".  it shows Antarctica as it had been before the ice. it is thought that a worldwide maritime culture could have created the map. the strangest thing about the map is the accuracy that's depicted.  it's drawn with an equidistant projection.  to draw a map using this method requires a knowledge of advanced mathematics and instrumentation. in 1513 this knowledge was unrealized to Europeans.  it's not until 1735 when the marine chronometer was invented that this standard of accuracy could be matched.

Atlantis didn't sink, as ice caps melted, the oceans levels rose, covering some of the continents permutations. there is evidence Antarctica's climate was radically different in the past.  the current climate cannot possibly account for the ice sheets.  the largest ice sheets are antipodal yet lopsided relative to earth's axis. this suggests a displacement of the earth's crust.  Antarctica is high above sea level, it is the highest continent in the world.

i hope to visit there one day to see it for myself!

A phone isn't necessarily always going to work when you need it but the point was that flat map projections are a thing because there are many situations where the inaccuracy really doesn't matter.

And in any case, you can use your phone GPS while happily believing any number of outlandish things about the overall shape of the earth. Knowledge of the calculations behind it is not required to be an end user of the technology.

Anti-vaccination sentiment, on the other hand, is a much better example of a situation where incorrect beliefs really can have significant negative effects on both a micro and macro scale. The shape of the earth is mostly a matter of trivia by comparison. A detail that most people are insulated from truly needing to know about.

Ok guys I never once fucking said the Earth was flat. I specifically said multiple time through this thread that the Earth just as all other astrological bodies are spherical.

I'd love to also visit Antarctica I am with you on the belief that Atlantis is that location just Frozen in time. With all the thawing and work the military is doing down there I am sure something will surface.
