NASA has also said it's publicity and they like pretty pictures. There is no straight answer as far as I know. The composite thing makes sense but if that's the case then why leave anything obfuscated at all, why even pretend they are accurate renderings..?

This is true. You have to be really far from earth to get a full view of the earth. Most satellites orbit between 250 and 1000 miles up. That is like being an inch above a basketball. Imagine trying to take a picture of an entire basketball from an inch away.

The main US weather satellite system (GOES) is in a geostationary orbit 22,000 miles above the equator. This distance it can see from the equator to about 75° n and south. The poles are beyond the horizon.

Even from the moon, you can only see maybe 45% percent of the earths surface.

I think there’s a huge misconception that just because you can get the entire disk of the earth in a photograph means you are seeing the entire  half of the earth facing you. That’s completely false. In fact there is no distance you could get to see 50% of the surface in one shot.

You can demonstrate this easily with a camera and a globe.



First pic is from 10 feet  second is from about 2 feet. Notice how the US looks so much bigger in the second pic and you can’t even see northern Canada and while the first pic shows a lot more? Same thing happens when you try to take a picture from space, and to even get a full disk photo without using a fish eye lens means you have to be really fucking far.



The circle represents the surface of the earth visible from the ISS. The rest is beyond the horizon

You can’t see Stars during daylight why the fuck would you expect to see them in a picture of the day light side of earth? The earth is far too bright to take a picture of it and faint stars in the same image.

People who don’t know fuck all about photography, perspective, field of image, focal length and exposure time and just claim “it’s a conspiracy” really annoy me. Stop being so ignorant.

I don't think they're really holding back humanity.. The only people who take them serious are other flat earthers :shrug:. It's not like it's still the 1500's or anything and there's still plenty of the world to be discovered but people are too afraid to go out and explore it.

For most day to day stuff a flat earth model gives predictions that are good enough, so for an average person it arguably doesn't really make much concrete difference whether or not their views on the matter are correct.


But the whole thing illustrates what powerful propaganda tools Youtube etc are. People in a receptive state of mind will watch hours and hours of this trash and believe they are educating themselves. Whether it's flat earth stuff or David Icke style lunacy etc.

There is literally nothing a flat earth model will predict accurately over a scale larger than a few dozen miles. Hell even something as basic as not being able to pick up a radio station more than 50 miles away has everything to with the earth being a sphere.

We have known earth is round for 2500 years minimum but somehow the Internet has made people stupider.
