Does anyone actually have "real" Ps. Galindoi? * 1
    #26041605 -

I've been wondering about this since all that gene sequencing info from Alan came out.

Does anyone on the shroomery have real Ps. Mexicana var. Galindoi? Every Galindoi grow I have ever seen looks like Tampanensis. Whereas other mexicanae look distinctly different.

Is there a way to get real Ps. Galindoi spores without going to Mexico and finding them yourself? Are there any real Galindoi grows hidden in plain sight? Since everyone refers to tamps as Galindoi, it's basically impossible to search for...

Just to be clear, I'm not looking for a print, just exercising my curiosity.

I'm working with ATL#7 that I bought from a non sponsor vendor. I can report in a few months whether or not it's Tamps but I'm optimistic. They have a smaller selection but I have never received a mislabeled syringe, they are what they say they are every time. All of their MS genetics have been extremely aggressive.

ALT#7 being tamps is not a mislabel. According to this thread

Alan Rockefeller said:
This morning I got some new DNA sequencing results back which finally solve the taxonomic mystery around these species.

In May someone found Psilocybe tampanensis in Florida, the first time it's been found there since it was discovered in 1977.  The sequence matches perfectly with a wild P. atlantis collection that I sequenced a month ago, putting into place the last piece needed to solve this puzzle.

I now have quite a few sequences from this group, and they all fall into two groups - The USA ones all match, and are 5 bases different from the Mexican sequences which also all match.

Both species are common in truffle cultivation, with P. atlantis forming much larger sclerotia than P. mexicana.

The caps look different - P. atlantis is lighter in color and more convex, while P. mexicana is darker, more striate and more campanulate.

Since P. tampanensis was published in 1978 and P. atlantis in 2003, the correct name for the southeastern P. mexicana-like species with large sclerotia is P. tampanensis.

Psilocybe galindoi is a synonym of P. mexicana, however what is being cultivated under the name P. galindoi is P. tampanensis.  P. mexicana/A is also probably P. tampanensis, while the Jalisco strain really did come from Jalisco and is P. mexicana.

Since ALT#7 is a variety of P. Atlantis, and P. Atlantis is synonymous with P. Tampanensis, you are growing tamps.

I assume "real" Galindoi would produce fruit and sclerotia similar to the Chico nindo or Jalisco varieties of Mexicana, but I can't be sure, because as far as I can tell I've never seen anyone grow them.

The place I bought this sells P.Galindoi prints, th ery just cost more. I basically got my ATL syringe for free. My next project will be wild cinctulus.

I buy syringes because they're cheap and I have a cheating ass system that makes agar work brain dead easy.

One thing about Alan's research and DNA testing:

Are we considering that the base that he is using is correct?  I mean tamps are basically a clone from various years of clones.  Maybe that is why there is only 5 base pairs away from mexicana?

Is PE for instance 5 base pairs away from cubensis?

All questions....I'm not trying to dispute Alan who is an integral part of this community.

Those are some really good points. I've always been interested to see What the actual DNA difference between my Lizard King and Treasure Coast variants are. They look very similar but the Treasure Coast are far superior in potency.

I'm really just asking questions here too, I'm not 100% on how this all works.

But as I understand it, DNA testing doesn't test the entire genome of the mushroom, it only tests relevant pieces of the code that will give us an idea of how simmilar the mushrooms are.

So based on my understanding, the DNA testing they did would tell us PE is genetically identical to every other cubensis.

I'm not sure what the implication of a "5 base pair" difference is, but Mexicanae appear to be very macroscopically different from Tampanensis, for reference;

This is Ps. Tampanensis;

And this is Ps. Mexicana Chico Nindo;

See, maybe that's where ATL differs, it's my understanding the Atlantis should produce leukistic fruits rather than solid brown.

Reguardless, color variance is normal within a species. Even if ATL#7 was albino, it would be an albino Ps. tampanensis variety.

That's not to say there is absolutely no difference between the tamps and atl#7 going around the shroomery. They were both discovered and distributed separately, so they could be as different as PE and B+.

Although from most of the grows I've seen, they look pretty similar.

So am I to understand no one on the shroomery has Ps. Mexicana var. Galindoi? No one even has any documented grows?

:sad:

Most what went around came from mis identified tamps, so true ones are rare. Hell I don't even know if mine is mex or tamp, cause I got it a while back befor the DNA testing when it was still claimed to be a species of its own. Many of us probably are unsure of what we have.

Wow, really interesting stuff and admittedly kind of confusing. Maybe we should just retire the galindoi name, feels like things have gotten too mixed up to ever fix! From my understanding, "real" Ps. galindoi isn't even a distinct species, it's the same species as Ps. mexicana if I understand correctly.

Exactly! At this point, I'm pretty sure Ps. Mexicana var. galindoi is actually a dead *variety*... someone mistakenly called tamps galindoi, and since they were easier to fruit and grew larger stones, the "real" galindoi was in a sense, cannibalized.

I guess the only thing left to do now is fly to Mexico, go "a bit south of Guadalajara" and find a wild mexicana, to start the new lineage named; Galindoi No. 2 :lol:

i don't know any more than anyone else, of course. but check the journal linked in my sig. these came from a print claimed to be galindoi. based on everything i've read and heard, i've concluded these are mexicana. compared to the above fotos, they certainly resemble the mexicana more closely.

doesn't look like tamps to me.

so the question is, how does an amateur positively id galindoi? can anyone share pictures known to be galindoi?

J. Jack

I have both your Galindoi and Doc9151's known wild tampanensis on agar right now.

I'm planning to grow them out side by side to compare.

Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.
