One of my all time favorite things to do, while tripping with one of my Atheist buddies...

Right when the psychedelic is peaking, and I can see them staring into the void - I lock eyes with them, "So, what was it you thought happened when you died?" Sort of implying 'You didn't think you'd get off that easy, did you?' - or if they get all negative about it, I just say, well; enjoy your eternal dirt nap! Sounds pretty laaame!

I guess I am playing both sides, haha. I guess I had to because realizing that nothing matters made me one depressed emo. Logic was, and still is, supreme and it was telling me that the things I find important, truly important like making a positive widespread impact on the world, didn't matter. The only thing I could think of that was important was emotion. Ironically, I always considered emotion to be the opposite of logic.

second definition of emotion: Instinctive or intuitive feeling as distinguished from reasoning or knowledge.

The only logical reason to live is illogical, haha.

I'm open to the idea that our lives matter in a tangible sense (outside of emotion, whatever that means) and I would totally welcome the idea! I think we have an uphill battle, however. You'd have to show to me that a life, no matter how small, matters. How does the life matter of a mosquito in Alaska, horrifically vaporized in the volcanic eruption of Novarupta moments after its birth along with everything around it so that there is no evidence of it's existence?

Amanita, you mentioned that "There is a mass amount of shit we do daily that means absolutely ziltch." If you hold the view that some things we do don't matter, then I would argue that nothing we do matters. You'd probably agree that this mosquito's life doesn't tangibly matter, so she'd be correct in her nihilistic view. It's either everything we do, however mundane, matters or nothing matters. I don't think you can have both... I think my view is everything matters because of emotion. Although it seems weird when I put it like that. And how does the emotion of that stupid mosquito make her life matter? Now I'm depressed again, haha!

If you’ve ever had someone do something nice for you, it’s clear that wasn’t meaningless.. at least to me, but I find myself more appreciative of things that don’t matter to others so maybe that realization is just for me and people like me..

I agree that interacting with others does seem to matter. But how does the mosquito's life matter? Everything she has every influenced is gone? Relying on being observed to have your life matter fails in this example.

Sadly, I think the "purpose" (not something I created but Hell, who knows?) is to "connect" to other people. This is what "God" told me during a psychotic break, lol, so whatever but...does anyone realize how fucking *shit* that purpose is when 99% of humanity is rabidly playing this social hierarchy game?

I fucking went downtown and thought I'd hang around the homeless because the last good time I had in my life 10 years ago was being homeless and getting drunk with my gutter punk friends. Bought a bottle of wine for these people. No biggie. Felt good to see them happy. Felt like a kig. For about 3 minutes. But even there. Even in a circle of homeless methheads, apparently, I was at the bottom of that value system and because I had hair product in muh hair, I was shit on, lol.

Anyways, people and their un-empathic, lashing out or whatever is what makes this world the Hellscape that it is. Doesn't matter what 'scene' you're in it's all a fucking shit sandwich eating contest and the whole fucking experience is shit and painful.

Like life is a 'dogpile' and everyone is stepping on whoever the fuck they can to get 'on top.'

Whatever. When I figure out a solution, ya'll ('the Shroomery') will be the first to know. This is legit one of the few places online that not's the absolute worst.

Yes, if there is a case where one life doesn't matter, then no one's life matters. But don't misunderstand me, I think all lives matter, so I'm okay. I'm just pointing out that matterness (new word) should not be defined as being observed by others because none of us will be observed and there will be no evidence of us  n years from now. If your definition of matterness excludes anyone, then it inevitably excludes you.

Why are so many here trying to figure out an objective purpose? It's like chasing your own tail, for it's IMPOSSIBLE to ever know what that is.

As my poll shows, most here subscribe to the view that we create our own purpose.
