Common, dry, brown leaves added to bulk hpoo/coir sub.
    #26022911 -

Heyyy...😁.  What's up shroomery??

Anyone out there ever added random, fallen tree leaves to their bulk substrates?  I was considering crushing some and adding them to my hpoo which is currently still "aging"....

If anything the crushed leaves would act as a fine type of filler within the substrate.  My substrate is going to consist mostly of a 45/45 mix of aged, finely chopped hpoo, along with coco coir and then ten-fifteen percent chopped straw added as well.

So, I'm just looking for opinions on the crushed leaves idea... could there be any added benefit to including such ingredients in a bulk sub?  πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”... (dried fallen leaves, peanut shells, dry corn husks)

Thanks guys, appreciate your opinions on this....

                    Have a good one!!! 😁

Basically any vegetable cellulose you can imagine will be eaten by cubes. Or at least added in conjunction with poo will pose no harm. Leaves are fine i grew these on weed

If they are sterilized why not....

If you are doing bulk pasteurization I'd be slightly worried about a higher level of wild endospores, I could imagine it making them a slightly more likely to introduce contams.

You cant add microorganism edible plant material to the bulk. Thats like adding extra grain at spawn. Contam city.

The only option would be to have the leaves in the jar so they get fully colonized before birthing.

this implies he is still composting the shit not that he is throwing leaves into his already pasteurized substrate.

I assumed he meant adding it before sterilization/pasteurization.

When ever I used hpoo I end up with allot of small flies..

Over time I learned to keep my grows as simple as possible..
I really like Bod's easy AF bucket tek..

Coir and nothing else..  Simple and great results..

I will add though, its better if your substrate is...fluffier...you don't want it too dense/compact, I'd be worried that dried leaves, which when crushed will fall to peices, and then water re-added would turn to mush..

BUT, if its not too many OR, like you have pointed to, they are somewhat composted shouldn't be an issue.

For ingredients like this though, I think I would prefer coco(as pointed out) or for bulk, fairly finely shredded/chopped wheat straw...the straw kind of provides "rails" for the myc to grow on.

I've wanted to experiment with adding peat, or better yet peat moss, to my substrates.

^THIS, 100x this. Especially when just starting, and even after you know what you are doing you will almost ALWAYS get better results by just keeping it as simple as possible, trying to come up with the "perfect" anything ALWAYS backfires unless its "perfectly simple"....BUT sometimes its fun just to experiment! After all, most of the materials/techniques we now use even in our most simple tek's were first discovered by someone experimenting. We should never become complacent...think where we would be if RR and others like him weren't always innovating.
