hey qman and specialpeoplesclub, how do you feel about taking every meal you eat and throwing half in the trash instead of eating the whole meal? you buy a milkshake, drink half and then chuck it in the trash. or how about you order a pizza, eat a few slices and then dump the rest in the garbage.

america has more than enough resources. we as a country are wasting 30%-40% of all food we have access to. thirty to forty percent!!! that is an estimate. its probably much higher in reality.

Quote:

In the United States, food waste is estimated at between 30-40 percent of the food supply. This estimate, based on estimates from USDA’s Economic Research Service of 31 percent food loss at the retail and consumer levels, corresponded to approximately 133 billion pounds and $161 billion worth of food in 2010. This amount of waste has far-reaching impacts on food security, resource conservation and climate change:

Wholesome food that could have helped feed families in need is sent to landfills.

The land, water, labor, energy and other inputs used in producing, processing, transporting, preparing, storing, and disposing of discarded food are pulled away from uses that may have been more beneficial to society – and generate impacts on the environment that may endanger the long-run health of the planet.

Food waste, which is the single largest component going into municipal landfills, external link quickly generates methane, helping to make landfills the third largest source of methane in the United States.

stats from USA govt website. go nation!

I'm don't think globalism is a smart idea, as local communities can be a very powerful, and environmentally positive, construction. I believe a city or small areas should have their own rules. Some stuff work locally and do not work globally. Also, not all resources should be shared / traded.
But I don't believe in national boarders.

Well, there seems to be some contradictions in your reasoning, if you don't want resources to be shared, you can't have open borders.

What happens if 500 million broke third world migrants flood into the US?  What happens to our resources for US citizens?  It's gone, that's why we have national borders, citizenship and national sovereignty.

and you say we are the ones dreaming. the population of the USA is only 327 million.. where on earth do you see half a billion people coming from? do you think half the population of INDIA is going to get up and move to the USA? lol

Quote:
Since 2000, legal immigrants to the United States number approximately 1,000,000 per year, of whom about 600,000 are Change of Status who already are in the U.S. Legal immigrants to the United States now are at their highest level ever, at just over 37,000,000 legal immigrants.

11% of people in the USA are documented immigrants.

yet we still throw a whopping 40% of our food supply in to landfills. go nation!

I don't think it would be legal to donate a half eaten meal.
It definitely isn't me throwing away a third of my food.

It isn't that simple. You would need logistics to get this wasted food to people. Why are people wasting it? Are people just scraping away half a plate?
I find this questionable.

Also, food isn't a single thing. What food should we send to the starving?

its pretty simple. dont send it to the land fill. give people a day (or weekend) to pick it up from the grocery stores that send it out.. but then why would anyone buy food if theu can just wait til the end of the week and pick from the free pile??

well the store wants to make money. thats why. yay capitalism!

Borders are an invisible land on the ground that governments want to force me to believe are real. I care as much about the people on the other side of the imaginary line as I do about the people on this side of it.

invisible, yes! and enforced by creating fear!

as in, if i have an oz of weed in this particular spot on earth, no one will bother me. but.. if i walk 100 miles east with same said bag of weed i can be arrested, charged and sentenced to 20 years in prison. hmm because i crossed an invisible (but fully enforced) line.

It would be against some sort of health and safety codes for a food distribution corporation to take my leftovers and give them to someone else. it's also undignified.

Like, it's a stupid suggestion. I don't even know if I believe those numbers, and if I did I'd think most of this loss is attributed to produce going bad in stores.

There are reasons these lines exist. They weren't just created. Russia is wide because it needs to protect Moscow, the US spread because of weak neighbors and to make itself more secure, Canada fought a war not to be part of the US.

Before we had coherent nation's there were frontiers between cultural groups. Some of these to back hundreds or thousands of years, with some change. Language, ethnicity, history are all real things modern people take for granted despite having access to more information than ever

Food is only ONE resource and what makes you think that food could ever be used for other people?

We're always going to have some waste of resources, how in the world does that justify the notion that there's plenty of resources for 8 billion humans to live a first world standard of living? It doesn't.

There's tons of food pantries ALL over the place.  This isn't anything new in the US.

Currently the US is sitting on 1.4 billion pounds of surplus cheese. Americans consume about 37 pounds of cheese, per capita. At that rate we can't come close to consuming what's in storage. The US government continues to subsidize the dairy industry to produce more and more cheese, and the government purchases the surplus and puts it in storage (giving some to food banks). It sure seems like a racket, with the USDA price supports. The government uses taxpayer money to encourage overproduction and then buys up the resulting surplus milk and cheese. More than 150 million pounds of milk was dumped last year!
