I'm the Universe, all of it. But, I'm as focal point of it who is right here, right now. Call me a tribalist in that regard but I have more feels for my City than my Province, Nation or the EU. From your choices, "World Citizen"

Am relatively nationalistic Canadian
but not necessarily to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of others
consider Canada to be in a position to better develop our own supply chains
and figure doing so would benefit our country as well as the global economy

consider Canada's national right to have traditional indigenous citizens engage with the global trade market through seal hunting and export valid
and consider European efforts to ban said market to be efforts staked against Canada and her peoples

My request for this thread is this:
someone please sell me on loving the United States in a similar manner
am playing a lot of Fallout 76, and one of the main themes of the game is a sentiment that the survivors of nuclear war in the West Virginia area are effectively rebuilding America
am trying to take that to heart in a character way -- something about my character was so important that the United States decided to provide her with shelter from nuclear devestation
and now the task is one of how she can repay that to the remnants of the US community

am currently running a shop full of goods for other players
and selling them at the lowest feasible prices so that other people have more of an opportunity to build their lives back up
and have a poster in my store that says "Let's Rebuild America!"
but cannot find the nationalistic passion to work to unlock the nice clean US flag decorations and hang those up around my home

and keep worrying that my "let's try to benefit everyone!" attitude in selling is not capatilistic enough
could easily double or triple my prices and make more money selling people things they consider character necessities
but it seems to me that immediate implemenation of hierarchical structures and economic stratification would serve to harm rebuilding America more than help it

it also gives me the interesting question of whether my love for Canada is so complete that after surviving nuclear war in the US
would my sole ambition be to return to Canada's land and try to live in her post-apocalyptic environment,
or to instead attempt to bring Canadian Cheerfulness to my little slice of Appalachia

The only way to love America is if (1) you grew up here and had a positive experience or (2) you moved here from another country that was just awful.

Its hard not to love the country u grew up in. Unless of course the country u grew up in was opressive and controlling over your freedoms.

My advice to you Tantrika is to visit some US cities in person. Then maybe u might love America with more of a nationalistic mindset.

Ive visited Mexico and I feel a connection there, like Im proud to have visited there. Perhaps its a similar feeling.

I like you Tantrika.

I am happy to be born and raised in America. I feel like I am pretty lucky to have been born here. I served my country also. I don't think I am proud or have pride in things, but I'm glad to be a part of it. I don't think America is better than every other place, but better than a lot of them.

I think humans are tribal. We group up, for reasons, commonalities. We fight for those reasons and for our "groups". I don't wanna go deep into it, but I just think we are that way. Just look at prisoners, they all group up into races, not by crimes they committed. It's because they all share something deeply in common, color. When it comes down to the wire, I think colors will group with like colors. I think it's just the way it is.

If zombies came, it's human vs. zombie and the nature changes. (I don't think zombies are coming)

Spent a winter in Mesa, Arizona
escaping the Canadian snows
that was positive and wonderous, but does not serve echoes that reach my spirit

and spent a lot of time in Minot North Dakota
grew up along the Saskatchewan/North Dakota border, and it was less distance and less headache to travel down to Minot for shopping trips and short vacations
than to travel up to Regina or over to Winnipeg
tho that changed in the wake of 9/11 and border crossing and weak Canadian dollar killed the appeal

but the US has a particular character; US patriotism has a loud and boisterous passion for opportunity that is difficult for me to connect to
Canadian passion is softer, gentler, and all about enduring and perservering

but as the Fallout 76 community is effectively an artificial representation of the United States
it becomes a question of whether my time in game is best served being 'aggressively' Canadian and simply trying to add my values into a melting pot
or if an adaptation to American values is necessary to build up a nation out of the remnants of cataclycsm

guess my question for US posters is something along the lines of
what do you most love about living in the US, and how do you feel that reflects the sort of overarching characterization of the country and community?

Nationalism is as retarded as cheering for your state's football team that is made of a majority of people from other states. Instead of cheering for the teams that are the best or most interesting because you simply enjoy the game. People are just blind and go with the flow. Nationalism is for the herd. Nationalism is for those kind of people who are so retarded they yell at their TV because of sports. Nationalism is divide and conquer mentality. Look at how many Americans still think Russia is an enemy for instance.

What do i love most about America....good question!

I would say the mixture of races and cultures, the overall peacefulness, the community feel in some areas, the "homey" feel of it, foods thT I like and exotic ones but with an American twist, familiar English accents, familiar words and names, basically it feels like "im home". I just feel like I fit in even thou i dont interact with strangers often. A paradoxial combo of being an individual and being part of the culture at large. Aculturation I guess.

Im sure other places have that too, and I havent travelled much of Canada, so i cant say for sure how different Canada is to America.

I wouldnt consider myself a hardcore patriot, cheering "USA! USA!". I love America but not that much. Perhaps its part of the social conditioning of growing up in the US that causes such love for the country.

But one of my favorite parts? Both Area 51 S4 and Roswell New Mexico happened here in the US. I couldnt be more proud of my country!

What I love most about America, or my country, has absolutely NOTHING to do with politicans or government.

All governments suck.

But maybe give a little credit to gov for things like free speech and roadways? :smile2:

Imagine a business that asked its employees for money to keep the business running. That's government. A business that is so corrupt and shit that instead of making money of the intrinsic value produced by the employees (citizens) it instead has to tax them to keep the show running. And they're able to sell it to us as this civic duty to keep roads nice and emergency services running. Fucking lol.

Ok Bob your going to make 50k a year at our company but you owe us 40% of that back so we can provide you your job in the first place. Sounds good?

Free speech is what the people do by themselves. The roadways are paid for by the people and built by the people. The potholes everywhere from neglect of duty, that's the government.

Yeah, that's just one way of looking at it though, a pretty ignorant one with a limited understanding of people. I don't get involved with sports, but I have known people like that and I have come to understand why they do it. It's not because they're retarded. I think everyone has a personal reason for their "nationalism" if they do have it.

I want the best for me and those politically connected to me. That tends to also be the geographically and culturally closest.
I would be a stupid person to choose to help people in another nation offer my own, just as I'd be stupid to give the last of my food to another if I were starving.

It's really simple for anyone that can contemplate desperation.

No, it's not a fallacy. The average US citizen uses 15-30 times more energy daily than the average human across the globe. We do NOT have enough of cheap energy for 8 billion people to live like US citizens, it's impossible.

This reality has NOTHING to do with national borders, it's simple supply relative to demand.
