What do you think of nationalism?
    #25983575 -

na·tion·al·ism
noun
Identification with one's own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations.

Do you think it is a good thing, a bad thing, or are you indifferent to it?

Do you feel that you are a citizen of your country or a citizen of the world?

--------------------
Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

I think its generally a negative thing. We should strive to be more globalist in our thinking.

Nationalism is the notion that my country is better than others because of the fact that it's where I live  :bored:  :whatever:  :cuckoo:

Nationalism is important. Self interest is important. Even similar nation's fracture if they aren't similar enough culturally. It's happened throughout history.
Because I live here my nation is more important

It can be a very good thing, especially when a nations' elite sellout their own citizens to globalization which hurts their chances of survival and standard of living.

Yeah, it's pretty easy living in a first world country and living a decent life and claiming to be a "globalist".

Does buying products built on third world slave labor make you a better person than a nationalist?

The world's billionaires are also globalists, what does that tell you?

borders are intended to divide people. look at the gerrymandering within the districts in the USA. politicians use legilative power to achieve goals that benefit the rich and are bemoaned when they try to help the poor.

What used to be called patriotism is now called xenophobia

The world is so connected now with the internet that I think a 1 world nation is inevitably happening but probably not in our lifetime.

A one world nation is a rediculous idea, unless geography becomes completely irrelevant.
It won't. You live where you live. No matter how connected you feel to somewhere else, unless you move there, your interests lie where you live.

Are people this disassociated from physical reality because of screens?

na·tion·al·ism
/ˈnaSH(ə)nəˌlizəm/
noun
noun: nationalism; plural noun: nationalisms
identification with one's own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations.
"their nationalism is tempered by a desire to join the European Union"
synonyms: patriotism, patriotic sentiment, allegiance/loyalty to one's country, loyalism, nationality; More
advocacy of or support for the political independence of a particular nation or people.
"Scottish nationalism"
synonyms: separatism, secessionism, partitionism, isolationism; sectarianism
"granting greater autonomy to Scotland is awakening English nationalism"
antonyms: unionism, federalism

Pretty heated subject. I tend to stay away from these kinds of things and keep a low pro you know bro? I think it can be dangerous is what I initially think.Especially all the synonyms related to the word nationalism. Even though it says specifically Scottish or Irish it can be applied to this country can't it? It also seems like once again religion plays a huge role in separating people while preaching love and unity, very hypocritical as usual.

I do not delve deeply (not much at all really) into politics for this very reason and other reasons. I found this very interesting article, but people do not live by this, in fact, it seems more people are trying very hard to meld the 2 together even more than ever. In my brief scanning of "nationalism" and hearing brief things on NPR and scanning articles on MSN it seems like religion is the basis.

The expression “separation of church and state” can be traced to an 1802 letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote to a group of men affiliated with the Danbury Baptists Association of Connecticut. In this letter he stated that religion was “a matter which lies solely between Man & his God,” and that government should not have any influence over opinions.

Therefore, he asserted: “I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.”

Jefferson was a member of the Church of England throughout his life. However, while a student at William and Mary, Jefferson became a follower of Deism, an enlightenment-era religion based on reason and observation of the natural world that grew out of the Enlightenment. Deists rejected the idea of supernatural occurrences, such as miracles, and they believed that God created the universe, but did not interfere in its workings.

Jefferson introduced the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom in 1779, which became law in 1786. It separated Virginia government from any established church and asserted that the religious opinions of men were not the business of the government.

Where you live is everything, and your idea is playing into an idea that is complete illusion from the connectivity we have from vehicles and screens.

It still costs me hundreds of dollars to travel across the nation. California has for less to do with me then someone in California.

I'm sorry if I sound mean, but like, it's troubling to hear people act like where you live doesn't or shouldn't have importance. Like, do I have the obligation to open my house to Somali refugies too? Are they my responsibility?

It's all so easy to say these things about globelism when nothing is at stake except your virtuous self perception.

you dont have an obligation to open your house to anyone, but IMO it makes you a beter person if you choose to do so. one who helps is more admirable than one who chooses to not help.

you dont sound mean and no, its not your responsibility to help anyone, period. but stepping up and doing so shows that you are passionate about the wellbeing of others and thats a good thing. i dont think it makes someone a bad person if they dont have the ways and means to help others.. but i find it hard to swallow that the gov't squanders billions of dollars on things that dont help humanity but rather make it worse for others whom already suffer.

Yes, that's what borders do, they divide people based on citizenship. That's the whole point of a nation state.  Why is this basic commonsense so difficult to comprehend?

It's the same reason why my property has a border and my door has a lock on it, to create a divide between myself and other humans.
