BRF cakes to 6-q shoebox, in the desert, questions.

Hey guys,

Really excited to start getting more into mycology.

For my first grow, I’m planning on using 4 BRF cakes/6-q shoebox tub, and using CVG as the substrate for the shoe box. Plans were to use a 2:1 sub:spawn ratio, and put into fruiting conditions (bag with holes poked in) at around 50% colonization of the shoebox.

Now I’m wondering if I should use a 1:1 ratio, though, and possibly put into fruiting conditions immediately. I live in the desert, and I’m not sure what would be best for keeping my substrate moist enough (bought a humidifier already)

-Are there any advantages to using a 2:1 ratio instead of a 1:1?

-Are there any advantages to waiting until 50% colonization to put into fruiting conditions, instead of just going into fruiting conditions immediately?

1 to 1 would be good for cakes cause they are mostly verm anyway. The advanyge to 2 to 1 would be you get more boxes from the same amount of spawn but it can take longer to colonize. If your shoeboxing then no need to worry about fruiting conditions. Just snap the lid and leave it for a week or two.

That makes a lot of sense, didn’t think about the verm already in the cakes! I’ll plan on doing a 1:1.

No worries. How do you prep your coir? I find when doing one shoebox I like to to get about a 1/4 or so of a brick of coir in a pot with plenty of boiling water in it. I stir this up till the coir is saturated. Then put a lid on it and turn off the heat. I come me back in the morning when its cool and bring the pot to the sink. I have another large bowl in the sink and I start squeezing the coir and then put it in the bowl when feild capacity is achived. Then I get my shoebox and put the spawn in there. Add the coir and mix well.  I lime to tamp the sides firmly but the middle not so hard, just try to make it even. I add another thin layer of straight coir and press that flat with a dvd case. That's why I like to do 5 boxes at once. I get 5 shoeboxes from 1 brick of coir. I bucket tek the coir so no need to squeeze. Its hard to get the ratio right when you eyeball the coir that's why I just shoot for being way over. Now you snap the lid and leave it closed for 10 days! After 10 days look in and see if it looks dry. Only if it lokks dry give it a light mist. The number one thing we do as noobs is mess with it too much. Good luck bud.

My plan was to follow Spitballs CVG recipe tek, but your method sounds great as well! Really appreciate the info. Now I’m wondering if it’s worth it to add the verm and gypsum....

I’m doing 6 different shoeboxes for this run, but  because of my work schedule I’ll have a three day gap between prepping the first box  and the last one. Is it okay to store the sub after you prep it, and keep using it over a three day period, or should I make it fresh each day?

I make mine a brick at a time and use it as I can. Keeping the bucket closed keeps it at field capacity and I haven't had a problem. But then again I would like to hear from someone with more experience, maybe I'm fuckin up and not knowing.
