I have 2 batches of qt jars. Oats, Tiger dropped agar.

Batch 1 looks healthy to me, I shook them after this pic.


Growth in batch 2 is much spottier, less rhizo, do they look contaminated? What should I do with them?


Sub-question: is there a recommended minimum amount of spawn for a 54qt tub? I have 6 jars in batch 1.

Your second batch just looks like tomentose is dominant right now. It doesn't look contaminated, probably gunna take longer but wont affect the potency of the fruitbodies.

What I'd do, is top fruit your 'N' jar, incubate M & Q and the others till they're fuller.

Agar wedges can have a combination of rhizo and tomento. Sometimes when you cut a wedge it'll be almost completely one or the other but it's usually a mix.

I think they all look good enough atm. See how they recover from a shake after full colonization. You can always spawn then separately in shoeboxes.

Jars look good

For a 54 qt tub you'll probably wanna use all 6. You can try 3 jars to 2 tubs, but for a tub that size I like using at least 4 qts.

Maybe try Making Shoeboxes

Pics and update as requested to help future newbs.

The healthy looking jars did very well in a shoebox and made many fat clusters like this:


The suspicious looking jars did have contamination and went green in a tub and a shoebox with not much yield before I had to dump. Beginning mold growth top center. 


The newb lesson here is that if your SAB has arm hole covers and you spray the inside with soapy water to work, you must air out the box after the work to avoid trapped moisture and the growth/contamination that goes with that.

Trapped moisture inside of a SAB has never been an issue....ever.

Pretty sure it was grain prep or during inoculation when the contamination was introduced.

Congrats on the fruits you got tho. :thumbup:

SAB isn't supposed to have arm hole covers. And when you're done with it you put it away so it wouldn't be possible for it to get trapped moisture
