Re: kill cantams while in jars

the reason you never have seen it mentioned is because some contams produce danerous chemicals, which will be assimmilated by the mycelium.. yielding toxic mushrooms..

thats good to know! i suppose it would still work for your more common non-deadly contaminents though...like green mold. also, if you did this repeatedly..you could keep the mycellium from ever even touching the contaminent...then birth the jar, and slice off the dead contaminant...im not saying this should be done in every case...but you might be able to save a few jars somewhere down the road.

How does anyone else feel about this??
Sounds like a good idea.

I think it's kinda a bit of work to save 80% of a jar, i'd rather just be sterile in the first place and never have to worry about it

As soon as a contam has appeared, the entire cake is doomed. The mycelium creates a network to carry nutrients all over, and once a little bit of contam is visible, it is already micropscopicly infected the whole cake.

then why is it that ive read sever teks that say you can cut contaminated sections out of caseing?
im not trying to dispute here. just curious what the difference is. also..i think shroom wizard says in there grow guide that it is ok to use jars that have had contaminants, but were taken over by mycelium...is this wrong? or did i just misread it or something?
