Worried about Contamination
    #560819 - 02/23/02 04:40 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

I premade my jars of verm and brf 4 days before I pressure cooked them. Do you think that in these 4 days, the was a chance that contaminants formed in the jars and if so, do you think that the pressure cooker killed all those contaminants?

Why did you put your jars into the pressure cooker?

(Insert your answer here)

Exactly.

I put the jars in the pressure cooker to sterilize them before innoculation. Does everybody do that?

I did put dry vermiculite on top of the cakes, but I do notice a wierd smell inside the plastic container with the jars in it. I guess that these are ruined. Wish I did innoculate them yesterday.

your fine man, actually afoaf lets the jars sit out 1 nite b4 PCing, his brothers girlfriend sisters mom second cousin told him it makes the spores of any possible contaminates germinate and then the PC kills them, it might not have killed the spores otherwise.....

nope start all over. 4 days for some wet rice to be sitting around without being sterilized sounds like something else started growing in there.

Well, I threw out those jars. They carried a very potent horrible odor, so I figured that nothing good could come out of them and I'll just start over. Thanks for everybodies posts

As I cleaned out the jars I noticed a fuzzy white substance growing all over the cakes. Since I didn't innoculate these cakes, I know that it couldn't possibly mycelium. Anyboody know what this crap is? Just wanna know for future reference.

that white fuzzy crap was cobweb mold. i usually let jars sit for a day or 2 before PCing to let spores germinate; they die easier supposedly but letting sit for 4 days was not your problem.
make sure you PC for 1 full hour ar 15PSI to make sure your cobweb mold doesnt come back. also be very careful when innoculating; i know youve read that but 1 mold spore in that hole in your jar lid ruins the jar. i knwo teks suggest it but that dry verm layer doesnt really do too much; i fill jars w/ substrate within 1/4" of teh top with pure substrate every time; unless its grain.
yes everyone PC's or at least boild their jars; you have to with this method.
dont get upset; every successive batch of jars will get you closer; your next batch might be the one! just be careful and make sure you keep that foil on your jars tight and closed ALL the time except innoculating. i innoc right thru the foil and tape it shut immediately so i dont even remove the foil; works awesome. just have little strips of tape stuck somewhere and use them immediately.

--------------------
Holy shit people; COMMON SENSE! we were all born with it where did it go?
maybe theres a tek out there to explain how to use it!
BUCKETS BRIGADE left hand man!!!

Oh yea..My pressure cooker doesn't have a dial or anything to indicate at what PSI or whatever level it is at. How do you know if it as at 15psi or not? My pressure cooker is a Mirro 6 qt. I think I bought it for about 60 bucks last year at a kitchen store. Do you think that there could be a problem with my pc?
