Why are these pins just getting super fat but not elongating? * 1
    #25909548 -

So, background... I have a few unmodified monotubs going (a la Bodhisatta’s TEK), started with a LC syringe of unknown cubensis variety inoculated into oat spawn and then into standard CVG as the sub. Six quarts spawn and six quarts sub per tub. I had some trouble with the corners drying out and bruising with my last set of tubs so I cased with 50/50+, which seems to have helped. Spawn run began 2/21 so it’s been about 38 days.

I first noticed pinning maybe 10-12 days ago. But since then the first pins have just gotten fatter and fatter, like large marbles, while the caps are squashed flat on top. A few of these fat pins have begun cracking along the sides. Meanwhile smaller pins are appearing evenly across the casing but those fat ones appear to have completely stalled out. All I can think is maybe bacteria? There’s no off odors that I can detect, however...

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

"an lc syringe of an unknown cube"? this leaves the possibilities endlessly open. All i can tell from  the pictures is that those are some serious fatties and might turn into monsters. All you can do is all any of us can ever do. Keep the conditions nice and be patient. If they are really stalled out it'll become obvious soon enough.

How's the humidity? I am thinking it's a bit high and you might need more FAE. I dunno though I'm guessing from speculation based off research not experience. It does seem like they are growing mycelium over the whole pin

No, I'm pretty sure it's like mushboy said... ksss spaceships. They never elongate.

Oh! Didn't know that was a variety. Sounds interesting...

Edit: Oh! Koh Samuai(sp?) Supep Strain or whatever... I've always wanted those. Orissa India too

Thanks for the prompt responses! Honestly I haven’t checked the humidity... I’ve been gauging it based on the appearance of the casing, which looks dry in the corners every couple days so I just mist the corners. I’m probably overcompensating for my overly dry conditions last time around. But I’ll put my hygrometer in a tub and check it out!

Never heard of KSSS spaceships. If they don’t elongate—and assuming that’s the variety Ie got— how can I tell when they are ready for harvest?

I think, IMO, you harvest when you can see the caps breaking off the stem. I heard right before they break is when you get the most potency

:whathesaid: those are definitely space ships they really do alot better after about 40 transfers on agar Haha but seriously you have to cut them down alot for better grows then clone from that... they weren't worth my trouble or I would have continued to grow but some dudes have bad ass cultures

Well I just so happen to have poured some agar plates last week with the hope of trying my hand at cloning some pins so I guess the time is now!

I dont know if I would clone those being they are so small but you never know .. I would literally transfer like 10 more times then drop a plate the genetics should get better.. usually the strongest genes survive the transfer so when we are isolating down we usually are getting better genetics woth time

Dude that's dope, pick the. Biggest and fastest growth on agar, doing that right now.

I’m completely new to the whole agar process... when I said clone what I meant was drop a pin onto a plate, then transfer the mycelial growth to isolate it from any contamination, and then start some new spawn jars with wedges once I have a plate that looks healthy. Is that what you’re referring to?

Yes that's a clone Haha...but when you clone you're cloning something that shows some phenotype you're interested in ... the fact those are so small you maybe cloning something that will always produce small fruits. The only way to tell is try but those are already matured you see the open caps? They wont get much bigger.

I was talking about taking the Ms plates you started with then transferring those down at least 10 more times then goto grain and they to find some better genetics ..

But if you have nothing else you can still clone q couple of those and see what you get

Clone from your next flushes, they're usually larger fruits.

Ahhh right, I gotcha. I think I was confused because I didn’t start with plates in the first place... I was given a liquid culture syringe by the speaker at a mushroom cultivation seminar and just injected that directly into ten spawn jars and then made 15 more using G2G. So the only genetic material I have to work with now is the fruits. I’ll harvest these little blobs I guess, and maybe try cloning one just for the agar practice and hope the next flush has more substantial fruits!
