That's a bummer...
We became friends near the last few months I was really active on the forum.

We had SO many arguments..eventually it led to a sort of mutual respect and understanding.

I remember him telling me he had some chronic pain or something like that..
May he rest in peace.

don't fret about death, or age or both, learn to hang and operate with openess at any age, for as long as you can, then start again.

Forum old timer, but IRL you have some catching up to do! :oldman2:

On March 23, 2019 I received two private messages from Ice after quite a long time. So, apparently, he reached out to me in his own way on the day he died. One message was in response to a message I sent to him after CosmicJoke died on June 13, 2018. Ice replied "Dead? Lucky fucker." at 5:57 PM edt. I gave give some grief for that because CJ was my friend for 20 years and I miss him. The second message was at 6:00 PM edt which was his final communication to me, namely, "You are one weird dude dude. LOL Cheers!"

So, I am taken aback. We certainly had our philosophical differences differences and we were probably 'frienamies' as they say. I did have some phone conversations with years ago, but pretty much all he wanted to talk about was death, death anxiety and his eventual suicide.  I will assume (although I know better) that he finally did the deed. As I have no horn, but am sitting with a goblet of Cabernet, I'll lift that instead. Indeed, his last word to me was

Rest in Peace Icelander (AKA J.M.)

CosmicJoke AKA Ron Cook died on June 13, 2018 from acute alcohol poisoning. There were no other toxins found in his system. Alcohol was not his drug of choice. I was notified a couple of days later, actually about 1:00 AM my time, by a childhood friend of Ron's. We spent many hours on the phone together, sometimes allowing him to get into my computer in Miami from where he was in Portland, OR to help with a program. He was super generous with gifts and I tried to reciprocate. He was supposed to have visited us this last January and since he had recently purchased his first house, we were invited to Portland as well. He wanted to take m'Lady Rose and me on a road trip into California. We were fast friends from 1999, when he was just 19 years old.

Jokeshopbeard flew in from the UK to the USA and visited several Shroomerites in July of 2017, and Ron was #1 on the list. I don't think JSB will mind if I mentioned that he and CosmicJoke made a surprise visit to Icelander (if he does he can edit as a mod  ). I was pleased to have received a visit from JSB a couple of weeks later.  I'll not post the pic with the 3 of them at Icelander's out of deference to JSB's privacy. But I do have this pic of CosmicJoke (I don't think he'd mind if I post it).

HEY! :wtf: I am not in any hurry thankyouverymuch!  :oldman2: Ice and I were the same age. I'll be 66 summer '19. My Great Uncle got around fine with a cane at 103. Even took a limo to the airport by himself then. Had his daughter not moved him out of South Florida, he might have lived beyond the age of 106. I'm hoping to exceed that, but it's not a fucking contest!  :shakefist:

Hey OrgoneConclusion, I have been lurking these forums for quite some time and have also read many of Icelander's posts.

Do you know what he truly felt and thought about death itself? When I was lurking he was writing about "Tricked By The Light". Do you know if he really believeved in this?

Also what do you believe happens when we die, OrgoneConclusion?

Thanks and RIP Icelander.

Damn, I wonder if he avoided the light or not.  He mentioned he was sick a few years ago, said he didn't trust the light because he had read that going into the light was a trap.

RIP

I think I know what you refer to. He had started having some notions about spiritual parasites infecting our species from ancient times. Several ancient cultures such as Toltecs had these ideas. Carlos Castaneda also promoted this as the "foreign installation". He also had starting coming up with fantasies about an afterlife similar to dreams or Castaneda's infinity that warriors are presented with at death. Until the last 3 months I spoke with Ice in email daily. I noted to my wife that I saw possible cognitive decline with him in the last 3 to 4 years. He was repeating himself more frequently as time progressed, developing notions that for him were less than rational, and experiencing paranoia and possibly delusions. He had also become much quicker to anger and negative in his personal philosophy. Very much no longer the guy I befriended in 2005. My son who had visited him several times over the years noted this also after his last visit about 2 years ago. This is my observation based on 14 years (with a 1 year break 5 years ago) of regular email, phone, and in personal interaction. I did not point these things out to him. I suspect he knew this. His talks of death became very frequent and we finally had sort of a falling out when he tried to ask me if I wanted his possessions after death and what did I want. I told him that I did not support planning his demise when he still had many miles left on him. He got angry and for the last 3 months our conversation was no more than small talk. Late last week he sent me an email where he said he dreamed that him and myself stood on the edge of infinity and that he was telling me he was going on a journey into that infinity. It made me uncomfortable, but Ice often said morbid things. I had not responded yet when I got the email from his sister. I sort of had indications, but he had talked this stuff for years so I was not sure. Honestly, I believe he had been possibly been experiencing the onset of Alzheimer's disease for over 5 years. I was really shocked and saddened. Monday I spent the day in sort of a depressed state and was very forgetful. To refer back to Castaneda, he once said the path of knowledge is only for the very sober of mind. A less than sober person could be broken by this path. You walk down too many dark roads you will eventually end up lost.

Thanks for that Mark, that's real sweet, but if you have it please post it; I really don't mind! Plus I can't find one of all three of us in my collection - I'm guessing it was a selfie one of us sent?

Also, I finally made it to the US again a couple of weeks back! I'll give you a shout Sunday for a catch up.

You too OC. Nothing like being reminded that one day we won't be able to talk to our friends anymore to remind you to talk to them whilst you still can!

I'm also thinking the Iceman wouldn't mind me posting this - he sure did love his dogs - and it's also a picture of the utmost beauty, to my eyes.

Glad you made it back to the states. Would be great to talk with you again.

I am off to the hospital (nothing serious) for a routine procedure (colonoscopy - ugh!) this morning. I have struggled with wanting to live and not caring about life anymore due to some seemingly insurmountable setbacks. Apparently, by the fact that I am doing this preventative measure, I have chosen life.

Also getting both hips replaced; one this summer and the other this fall, so that maybe I can be fully active again.

To those who don't know me, 50 years of racquetball, biking, surfing, powerlifting, skiing; etc. + age wore my hips to powder. I could feel it coming on when I hiked with Huehue some 8(?) years ago, and definitely when I hiked and did mild rock climbing with JSB two years ago. I had nearly lost all my confidence even though I felt really fit.

Am trying very hard to write a few more adventures and experiences into my book so that I will have few regrets when my time comes.

Wish me happy probing! :birthday:

OK JSB, here it is then. One of my first thoughts is what about the dogs?! He would not have left them to starve, what must he have done (assuming again that he did die by his own hand)? :frown:

In January of 2018, Ice PMed me with this brief question which opened up a discussion. I was very surprised because after his initial zeal for enlightenment in the 70s (much like myself and millions of other psychedelic novices at the time), he felt taken advantage of by some rinky-dink Yoga ashram. Anyway, he wrote:

"Since Gnostic is in your handle. Do you hold with the Gnostic mythology about Sophia and her fall and the Archons and the Old Testament God being the Demiurge etc?

It seems those beliefs go back to ancient Egypt and maybe further.  It's fascinating stuff."

Icelander is family, even though we never met. Exchanging thoughts on so many subjects for such an amount of time connects you, I think, in a lot of ways that not very many other things in this life can offer.

In his message he called me a full on junkie. Said life is very good when you're on the main line, and cited Schopenhauer...

He freaked me out about four years ago because we were talking about his neuropathy and death, and he stopped responding, and was no longer posting here and possibly hadn't even logged in for months. So on a bunch of ecstasy I messaged him with a lot of love , and he advised me to not talk to anyone while on ecstasy. :rofl2: Still haven't learned that lesson. :smirk:

I'm bummed I didn't make it back in time to accept his invite, but I have no doubt he danced with death like a true warrior, and his philosophy is going to live on and pester our own for the rest of our lives. :mushroom2:
