I formally ask the mods to include Icelander's 'Three Strike Rule' in memoriam as part of the forum rules.

Essentially it proposes that if a poster ducks a question three times, then he must concede the point.

That, and that they serve rainbow trout every Friday in the cafeteria.

Icelander was a shroomery legend. When I was young and idealistic I used to dislike him because of how bleak and pessimistic he often was, but the older I got the more I found myself agreeing with him.

Peace be with you Icelander
Until we meet again
Will we even recognize each other in our new form
Will we even care about this life
Once the veil is lifted
Until then friend

If any are interested, he posted over at the (now defunct) Lycaeum forums as Ki Boy from 2005 to 2007 I believe it was, most active in s&p of course, though he had far more time invested over here at the shroomery.  Ki was one of his dogs names.. He was a good guy.  Helped me understand a number of things, or tried to.... I was also once planning to meet up with him at burning man '05 but hell I had just turned 20 and working on my family raising, couldn't make it.

Using the way back machine, Lycaeum can still be viewed, though jumping too far back at once in page numbers in a given forum usually confuses it , it seems.  Unfortunately the search function require login, which is impossible atm.

As I woke today to make coffee, I was thinking of Icelander which is not a thing I do every morning.

His life force was strong. I had a question I was going to ask him.

then bam - I read this - shit!
the intractable mountain man is gone. what a mess!

entropy.

Just got a PM from him a few days ago as well after his long MIA. Must have been doing the rounds and reaching out to everyone from his past.

I don't know any details about his passing but I hope he was at peace. He was a great man IMO and had a lot of enviable qualities. Not all good of course as none of us seem to be. But in whole Ice was an amazing dude. I was able to meet him on a trip near his home. He cooked me a great meal and was a generous host and from what I could tell a positive force in his community. From his time spent teaching martial arts to his time working the co-op scene to his time in retirement hiking around and chatting up everyone he came across. And that's just the little bit that I know.

When visiting him, the misses was with me. She met John only the one time and I know he left a distinct impression on her. It's not every day you walk into someone's home and they are not afraid to be fully honest. That was John IME. Brave enough to be honest at any point about any thing. He knew his limits, he knew his strengths, and he was better for both.

I am sad to hear of his passing but also know that several issues plagued him in later life. So if there is relief then it was perhaps for the best. I will miss you Iceman.

This is a fitting poem for Icelander.

His insight was immensely helpful to me at times over the years. A warrior for sure. I hope this is an Obi Wan Kenobi kind of situation for us down here in the weeds at the Shroomery.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,

to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Back in July 2017 CosmicJoke (RIP) and I went on a pilgrimage down to Southern Oregon to see if we could find Icelander after he first went MIA on us here. It was a stunning journey, and we found the legend himself, alive and seemingly well (as could be). We stayed all afternoon and had a truly heartwarming time, one which will always be dear to my heart.

Given how cantankerous he could seem on the boards at times, I was stunned by how kind and welcoming he was - especially since we had turned up completely unannounced - my first great lesson on how different people can be IRL compared to the opinions we can form of them here. Ron (CJ) and I were both prepared for a possibly 'Icy' reception, but it was in fact anything but.

Here's to two dearly departed friends. I miss you both immensely, and cherish the time we shared, and send love to you both; wherever you may be.

Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

Well it is good to know that he finally conquered his death anxiety. Hopefully I'll see him on the next big one.

I think he resented his death anxiety. I believe it galled him to be fearful of death. If he did go out by his own will then it was most likely meant as a big fuck you to death. I knew him pretty darn well...likely as well as anybody knows anybody. We went down a lot of roads...some of them deadly dark.

haha Icelander and I used to have intense arguments and swapped some unkind words at times (as circastes).

He looks way more chill IRL than he acted on the forums.

He still exists. I win the death anxiety debate, game set and match; there is no death. He knows that now. Just an ongoing divine play of experiences.

I wonder if his previous idealism like someone suggested made me a target, with all my idealism...

eh.

RIP
