papertowlers in place of tyvek/coffee filters?
    #2586811 - 04/21/04 12:23 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

Im almost ready to innoculate and I do not have any tyvek filter material or coffee filters, can I use a double layer of paper towels under and on top of the lid of the jars?

Papertowels are meant to be absorbant. Water will be suspended in them causing breeding grounds for contams.
Don't use. The post office has free tyvek envelopes just sitting out, usually in a bin on the wall for you to grab.
Peace

So I hoping I did okay,and everything turns out good.Wish Me Luck!lol

You post and ask what you can use then when people dont give you the answer you want you do it anyway?good luck!

that is just stupid man, sorry. If you dont have the patience to put off innoculation a few hours till you get Tyvek or filters, then your not gonna do too good later on.If you get that far with your pillowcase jars.

Its sitting right in post offices for free, you nee not ask anyone. And the differance is huge.tyvek blocks microbes down to a very small size,it doesnt hold contaminants like cloth would,ut doesnt absorb water, its tough, and im sure there are other reasons, but the fact is whether you can pronounce it or not,it does work.Thats a fact.
You are the fisrt person ive ever heard of who would even think of using a pillow case:lol:
Hey at least youll learn a lesson  when you get home to contams.
Good luck.

In one hour you can make enough tyvek filters to last a lifetime, all you need is a cooky cutter.

I think this is more of a lazy thing then anything else. After the pillow case jars go down give tyvek or poly fill a shot.  :crazy2:

no.#1 new ones will be able to get through the cloth. You might not see any holes, but remember spores, whether from mushrooms,or mold are microscopic.they will make it through.#2 Take a shirt or sweater or a pillowcase for that matter and get it wet and let it sit somewhere.Whats gonna happen?its gonna get mold and milew on it because it holds moisture.Your jars are going to be evaporating during incubation. This along with the moisture absorbed into the cloth during steralization is a contam magnet.#3 if its a natural fiber used in the pillow case like cotton, its foodd for contams.
bottom line man,if there was an easy way to do it like you suggest people would.tyvek is as easy as it gets and it works.plus its free in ALL post offices or online.

You can orer them from here sent to you for free. But these are for us mailing only.
Now because of either total laziness or cheapness youve waste your time, spores, and substrate.I really dont know why you asked.you didnt listen.
