Polyfill, tyvek or filter discs?

Which method do YOU think is the best and why? I am of course referring to the different methods of allowing air exchange in your jars without introducing contaminants. Also, with the tyvek or filter discs (the type mycosupply has), is it best to forget the lid all-together and just use the ring? Thanks...

Tyvek's easier to work with than polyfill, but their filtering capacities are comparable. I like to use tyvek. I personally believe that you should use the lid rather than just the ring. You want a good seal to keep out as much contams as possible while the sub is colonizing.

tyvek with holes in the lid is recommended (I think). never had problems with this method.

Sometimes using just tyvek and the ring allows too much gas exchange. I've seen the top portion of a jar not colonize as well because the substrate has become more dry due to not having a lid.

Yeah. I just use coffee filters on top of my lid. Works so far.

You could try a micro-pore tape over the holes.

I use both..I put my tyvek on the lid and some polyfill under the holes in the lid where i inoculate, Doing it this way is double protection against contams If you just use tvyek and tape your innoc hole it still can let contams in especially when you shake your jars, Think about it Its cut my qt jar contam rate to non existant pretty much, The only way my jars contam is if its a bad syringe

I mean still using tyveck under the lid. So it would be tyveck, lid, ring, tape. I think the holes in the tape would be smaller than the holes in the polyfill. No?

Word! My experience as well. Polyfil has it's uses but not as a lid filter IMHO. Tyveks free and works like a charm and when used in combination with the lid allows the jars to be shaken when doing grains. Oh ya do yourselves a favor forget the tape! It doesn't make for a healthy culture period.

You could go tyvek, lid, tyvek and then put the ring over all 3. Of course you would need to have holes drilled in the lid for inoculation. I like Tyvek the best out of the 3 because it's free.

Either way, after you innoc., your going to have to cover those holes. I think two layers of tyvek might start restricting gas exchange.

So no tape, no poly. Just a couple coffee filters. Nice. You can always count on Mr. agar

Do you tape over the poly? And it makes a good seal?

Some people swear by poly fill, some love the tyvek. For ease of use, tyvek is the way to go. If you have a hard time getting tyvek, poly fill works perfectly well if you know how to construct a proper filter with it.

I would really like to hear more about the synthetic filter discs. One time I use the discs along with the lid, and used polyfill for the innoc hole which was about 1/2" wide. The jar colonized so slow that we just threw them out. It seemed like that was not enough air exchage for sure. So I would guess that tyvek lets more air through? And also, what about using bandaids over innoc points on a jar w/o the lid and just a filter disc/polyfill?
Failed me.... (filter disc)
