This question came up a while back on another board so I figured Id post it here... Have you ever made coffee with a coffee maker? Have you ever forgotten to throw ot the used filter/coffee grinds? Ever notice that fuzzy stuff growing on it? I wonder i that would work as a substrate in a jar. Anyone ever try it?

If I know what you're thinking of, it involved using soil instead of grain.. It's actually on the shroomery. (http://www.shroomery.org/findorgrowthem.php?View=docs&doc=23) Supposedly better at keeping out contams.. However you can't use store bought beans, because of all the additives, the fact that they roast them, and the mycelium likes the shells of the beans more than anything anyway. The guy had a coffee tree in his house, so it wasn't much of a problem for him to get fresh coffee beans, but I don't know how easy they are to find otherwise.. But hey, still might be worth a try.. If you can get fuzz growing on it, maybe shrooms would like it too.. Post any results! -Mark

I don't use any brand-name filter-discs, but... I cut up pieces of air-vent filters (from wally-m's) instead, almost as cheap as coffee filters but... a nice air flow through without letting in contams, as far as the coffee filters -- they'd certainly get ruined when you went to sterilize. peace out! -protocoldroid
