Pint jar uses?
    #25853230 -

hi all,

SWIM bought a dozen pint jars for some reason before attempting a BRF grow. He knows that the BRF tek calls for 1/2 pint jars though. Why he bought them, who knows.

SWIM wants to know whether doing a BRF with pint jars changes anything. Would he be better off doing a brf to bulk?

Pint BRF jars take waaaay too long to colonize and don't perform well. BRF is all about giving mycelium a fast chance at success. Adding an extra half pint of medium only exacerbates the potential for failure. My opinion based on my experience, though.

Just fill them up half way and that gives you a half pint.

BRF calls for a dry verm filter layer on top, so you can definitely just fill the jar half-way. As with any BRF jar don't disturb the filter by over handling it.

Theres a problem thou. The syringe will not reach that far into the substrate. Also, pint jars sometimes have smaller necks at the top, so u cant birth them like half pints. U could invitro grow them thou, which works but is kinda a pain in the arse.

I have brf in pint jars as we speak. It's been about a month and I'll birth them today. It takes longer than corn/wbs, working with oats next. 2 of six brf didnt make it. All of my corn and abs has.
Tell SWIM to step his game up. Everyone starts somewhere new.

Hmm, interesting. Reason BRF uses 1/2 pints is probably for time. Even the long 1/2 pints slow down a lot as it colonizes the bottom. A pint will probably take even longer if not stall out.

You can always try it, see if it works. Or if youre feeling innovative you can always fill the bottom half with just wet verm at capacity, BRF over it, then top it with dry verm. Reason to use wet verm at bottom is so it wont fuck with the overall water content too much.

If it slows down when it's near the bottom, flip it upside down so the whole jar is top down. If the mycellium sticks to the inside of the jar, hit the cap on a piece of wood. I have noticed it gets too crammed at the bottom, so it slows it down, flipping it allows air to get to that area and colonized as fast as the rest of it.

Swim is something you do in water.

Half fill'em, use a filter lid, cut into quarters and break to bulk(or top fruit) when done colonizing.

Here's how I do it.

/e response to suggestions.

Never flip brf jars. Condensation may pool onto your filter and let contams wick in. It's either gonna colonize or it won't, nothing much you can do if bottom stalls/goes bacterial.

Don't try half filling and dry verm(or that layering suggestion). That would require you to put the needle through the dry verm, which would be halfway in the jar, making it nearly impossible to do without getting your hands over the jar opening or into the rim. By using a lid filter, you can drip onto the cake without getting everything over the opening risking contams.
