how do you not? do you know a lot about the subject? most people dont. i can at least see two fungus (100% at this point) and possibly anthracnose? im not just talking out of my ass here. you have definite problematic fungus on a lot of those cacti. not trying to sit here and argue with you but not sure why you think im wrong when im not.

also its not really "a huge fuss" to treat ur cacti with a fungicide. I promise it will be a huge fuss though once it spreads and you start losing cacti. which you will if you leave that untreated. ur advising someone to avoid simple gardening techniques to prevent an obvious and wrather aggressive fungal infection. i dont get where your coming from.

I see: Fungal Blight, Phyllosticta, botryodiplodia. possibly  ‘sun-scald’ fungal infection, possibly anthracnose. none of which I would take lightly in my greenhouse. all of which can be treated and controlled if not completely cured. anyone who tells you that there is no fungal infection on those cacti is completely uneducated on the subject. no offence. seriously.

I've got over a decade under my belt. I know all the top growers and I've yet to treat any fungus on my trichocereus. I think I used a copper spray once. Everything will grow out in my opinion.

Lots of speculation aye.

over a decade and you've never had rot on a cactus? I find that hard to believe.

I've had rot. I usually cut it out, treat with sun and fresh air.

I've documented all of this over the years.

I'm not here to argue with you. He can use fungicide if he chooses to do so. I'm just saying it's unnecessary.

rot is from fungus and bacteria. also it doesn't usually show up on new growth until its too late and the whole cactus is dieing or it has reached the core. they wont just grow out of it. if you have not had a cacti die from fugal rot in ten years then you are either very lucky and have immaculate growing conditions or you don't know how to identify it very well when it kills a cactus. they are very common. how is protecting your plants ever not necessary?

Not all rot is caused by this. Secondary infection can take hold I agree.

Please tell me more about how to grow cactus. LOL.

diddnt mean to offend you buddy. all rot is caused by infection as far as i know. people are just starting to understand and learn about cacti disease and virology. i have been lucky to know formally educated individuals that have passed information to me. they have dedicated enormous amounts of their lives to understanding the subject and are on the forefront of the information. you cant even google it. I personally have ten years of cacti growing experience myself and 20 of gardening experience in general. not trying to have a pissing contest but simply suggesting that you dont know everything. you dont have to listen to someone tell you information that you dont want to hear, but the OP deserves correct information.

here is some good information you wont find on google:

Bacterial and Fungal Infections
Bacterial and fungal infections are opportunistic. They typically come from the soil or surroundings, waiting for the right conditions, in which they then flourish. Entering through wounds in the skin and roots, they typically establish quickly. Pathogens entering through cell walls in the roots or outer chlorenchymal layers are facilitated by abiotic conditions such as a localized nitrogen toxicity or localized calcium deficiency. Calcium isn’t mobile within the plant, and localized deficiencies are often first seen on the lower portions of the column, or in the actively growing tips. Free ammonia in the soil or media may adversely affect the roots, lower portions of the column and areoles.
Bacterial infections like Erwinia often begin with a raised blister or bump and are a symptom of abiotic cause; akin to blossom-end rot in tomato. The bacteria produce enzymes such as pectinase to decompose adjacent cell walls, expanding the infection. Left untreated the infection can advance, working deeper into the parenchyma and excreting a black bio-liquid through the wound. Treatment often involves opening the deeper wounds and cleaning them out. In some cases, these bacterial infections will resolve without taking any special action.
Fungal infections are generally more difficult and typically classified as blights. They can be treated with copper-based fungicides, a Bordeaux mix was found to be effective over a longer period of time than fixed-copper sprays like copper oxychloride. Organic treatments which have been found helpful, include Bacillus Thuringiensis and di-potassium salts of phosphoric acid. (Experiment for plant compatibility and phytotoxicity before applying any new product to your plants on a large scale.) Pathogens causing blight include anthracnose, fusarium, phomopsis, phytophthora, pythium and others. Infections like fusarium and phytophthora can hollow out or infect a Trichocereus from the inside, sometimes destroying a plant within days. These infections enter through damage in the roots or other injury sites. Pathogens like anthracnose and phomopsis may only cause surface cankers and lesions, though can take a plant over given the right conditions. Warm, humid weather or saturated soils and media promote these diseases. Overhead watering may also contribute as the pathogens residing in the soil are splashed onto the lower portions of the plant.

I've read that and some of my closest friends are the people you speak of. Also, no microscopy or biopsies have been taken. This is all based on visual observation. I want to see micrographs.

I just think you're being a little pedantic. Over reacting to fairly basic problem, that will correct itself over time.

My proof. Read through the thousands of posts and see the results of the people I've coached. It's all there. Most of the newskool bite my work and some of my teks are standard in the community.

Edited to add: I certainly don't know everything and never claimed that I do. I learn new things each and every day. I'm not an authority and I don't have my head up my own arse. Just want to make that clear. I'm as n00b as you, the next guy and the up and comers entering the field.

I know gee bee has done some microscopy, but that is getting way out of my league and one would have to ask her or someone for that info most likely. you are probably right about me being a bit pedantic and to each his own but I tend to go better safe than sorry. mainly because I have been sorry and treating with copper is just so easy. I hate fungal infections on cacti. they spread fast and are hard to notice early. I diddnt start out growing cactus with fungicides. its something that I learned to do because I was having fugal problems and losing cacti. whether or not it will grow out is up to the growers own speculation i guess. But, there is in fact a fungal infection in at least two of those cacti. yes, it is visual confirmation but i know what to look for. whether to treat it or try to let it grow out is up to the grower as well obviously. but i can say 100% that there is a fungal infection. my cacti diddnt grow out of that same infection (i know...no microscopy but trust me its the same).

also i have seen pics of the OP's setup and there are cacti stacked above cacti, this is a pedantic (lol) no no. when watering, the excess water will flow onto the cacti underneath and spread infection.

anyways, to each his own. we all learn in our own ways. all know different aspects of growing from issues we have had to deal with. btw I appreciate you being civil, I like a good conversation but really diddnt want to fight or anything. i honestly just love cacti and growing in general and want to help. noobs unite haha much love

Just to be clear this is one of the cacti I would be most worried about.

notice the abnormal scarring appearance. that is the fungus. the orange is a clear indicator. a closer pic would reveal tiny black dots on the surface. those are the fruit bodies that release spores.

That cacti looks to be PC anyways and should be separated or just tossed imo. that's it im done lol

For the record I now how Coreflute sheets under the racks in the greenhouse so when watered the water flows to the end of the rack and then onto the ground so it's impossible for water from above, to hit those below.

I have given them a spray with the copper. So time will tell if it's effective.

awesome good job, sorry to jump to conclusions. should probably hit it with copper again at some point. probably wont kill it 100 % in one go. I think you should be able to tell when its dead though, mine seamed to go from yellowy white to a grey over time. greenhouse is awesome btw. they are gonna be monsters in no time. good luck dude!
