nice find there are some serious beauties in that bunch! although you should probably treat those with a fungicide like copper. cacti are prone to fungal infections.

Yeah a few of them have some serious width... 3 of them are like tree trunks and probably between 5-8 inches diameter.

I'll have to get some fungicide tomorrow when I go get more cactus potting mix 👌

I wouldn't worry about a fungicide.

Also, Yowie spines point downward in pairs. Not upwards.

I actually picked up on that typo when I read it then looked at the photo lol but I went off the photo and worked out it was a Yowie that I had. Been in the greenhouse all morning potting up and labeling everything... Starting to look real good :smile:

pic 2 and 5 on the second row in the op definitely look like fungal infection to me. its cheap to treat. its good to do as preventative as well. but to each his own. I like clean cacti. dealt with fungus, thrips, gnats, mealies and scale enough to go the extra mile to not have to deal with them again.

Does that mean that those fungal areas can be cleared up? I also prefer clean looking cacti but was under the impression the old growth would always have scars and only the new growth could possibly be clean? Or can the old growth clear up aswell?

there are a lot of different fungal infections. I am hardly an expert on the exact kinds and their names however they are all treated similarly. some hardly matter and are just unsightly, some will kill a cacti in days. there are also bacterial and viral infections. bacteria kills quick usually and viral is among the worst being there is no cure and it spreads easily(tobacco mosaic virus is the most famous). my guess is you have a couple different fungal infections. they can be cleared up by using an oxidate or copper fungicides. your cacti look strong but they look like they have been kept in very poor conditions. almost all of them are off in color. my primary concern would be #5 in row 2 because that looks very infected. I would keep it away from my other cacti as I treated it so it doesn't spread. it might be too infected to cure but it probably wont die right away either. the treatments are good to use as a preventative as well as a treatment so win win.

I don't think that's available in my country but there deffinetly is a copper fungicide. I also wasn't aware the fungal infection can spread between cacti... I'd hate to loose my collection due to one shitty plant so I'm going to have to look into it I think

yes it can definitely spread. through spores and direct contact. I would treat all of them and keep a good eye on them. especially number two and five row two. those ones look like the same fungus that has killed my cacti before. but it also could be widespread. they look a lot like corking or scaring so its hard for a non expert(like me) to tell 100%

Best to cut out any rotting sections with a sharp knife.  Make sure you get it all and let the cactus callus over in a dry environment.  No need for fungicide.

I don't know if my OCD would let me grow a cactus with sections all cut out lol... Hoping to try and fix the fungus rather than remove it

If it is soft and rotting then its best to cut it out.  If it is firm and drying out on its own then it is ok to leave it and not use fungicide.  A cut piece will go on to grow and more than replace what is lost.  But if you let rot get out of hand it can do a lot of damage or even kill the plant.  I like to cut out any bad sections of a cutting that have active rot, then let everything callus, and then plant the cutting.  In that order. But ymmv.  Best luck whatever you do.

I've treated with Copper fungicide today so will give it some time to see what happens and if it doesn't help then I'll start to cut and clean up the cacti :smile:

well a lot of the marks are there to stay. as the cactus grows they will fade but they probably wont 100% disappear. I wouldn't make cuts unless you see rot. I would keep the cleanest looking ones a bit away from the ones that look like they may have issues. water splash from watering is how a lot of things spread. just keep an eye on them and if you notice marks spreading, then take action. good luck man! good job on the copper fungicide, its something that every cacti grower should have on deck.

The guy lives up in Queensland. It's humid up there. These plants wil get marks and blotchy at times. It's a symptom of the environment up there.


Most of those marks will grow out. I don't see anything that warrants all the fuss.

We've all been there.

Your main priority is getting them to root. The faster they do this then the faster they get growing. Actively growing plants are generally healthy and out compete any minor spots.

If anything crops up while they're rooting then get back to us, and we'll go about diagnosing. It's just a waiting game now. It can be the hardest part.
