Bulk ID request :)
    #25795914 -

So I picked up this bunch from a seller, and I'm very new to cacti so without being told what something is, I have a hard time indentifying. I have a rough idea what some of these are but would love someone with more knowledge to give me there opinion... 👍

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply mate! That helps a lot... I was way off lol I thought 1-2 were Super Pedro so I'm glad I didn't label them as such. Do you think any of the Bridgesii would be the "Psycho0" or "Eileen" clones?

Some that I call peruvianus may turn oout to be something else once they grow a bit, or be a hybrid.

?? denotes that I'm unsure or too small to make a proper guess.

From left to right.

peruvianus, bridgesii, bridgesii, maybe bridgesii or a cross.

cuzcoensis possibly, ?? ,bridgesii, ?? , peruvianus

All peruvianus

cuzcoensis maybe, maybe bridgesii, pachanoi possibly, pachanoi possibly. These need to grow a bit more to be sure.

One looked kind of Yowie-ish but it's too small to say. Their spination is unique enough that you'll be able to tell in time. Some Psycho0 can be hit and miss to id, depends on it's environmental conditions.

You've grouped them fairly well. Except the very first picture, I think they're pachanoi's.

I agree that your Psycho0 does in fact look like a Psycho0.

Thank you for the offer but I have enough cactus to deal with already. Offer them in the marketplace would be my suggestion.

I'm not sure about the peruvianus ID on the very first two pictures.. :sun:
The spines look odd to me. Each one is so swollen at the base and ashwhite, that's uncommon for trichocereus.

Look more like sth else to me, not even a tricho.. maybe polaskia? Could be wrong, but I have never seen a peruvianus like this..

They have now been added to the Pachanoi group as I was incorrect with having them in the Peruvianus group

My biggest trouble is indentifying the ones in the above group I have labeled as "Yowie". The seller has told me they should be Yowie but I have comments above from very knowledgable people saying there Peruvianus. So I think I may change them to Peruvians as per Karodes comments

About Yowie:

"The clone is easily recognized by the upwards pointing pair of spines, that makes it very different from other clones that belong to this species.
However, similar plants can be found all across the world, so it´s not really sure if it is actually a clone or just represents a local type.
I know similar (and almost identical) Pachanois, especially from Ecuador and it may be very well possible that they are not genetically identical to the Yowie clone.
If you encounter similar plants, you can just test it by trying to breed it with a verified Yowie."

Yeah a few of them have some serious width... 3 of them are like tree trunks and probably between 5-8 inches diameter.

I'll have to get some fungicide tomorrow when I go get more cactus potting mix 👌

pic 2 and 5 on the second row in the op definitely look like fungal infection to me. its cheap to treat. its good to do as preventative as well. but to each his own. I like clean cacti. dealt with fungus, thrips, gnats, mealies and scale enough to go the extra mile to not have to deal with them again.

Does that mean that those fungal areas can be cleared up? I also prefer clean looking cacti but was under the impression the old growth would always have scars and only the new growth could possibly be clean? Or can the old growth clear up aswell?

Re: Bulk ID request :) [Re: EthnoM8]
    #25799216 -

there are a lot of different fungal infections. I am hardly an expert on the exact kinds and their names however they are all treated similarly. some hardly matter and are just unsightly, some will kill a cacti in days. there are also bacterial and viral infections. bacteria kills quick usually and viral is among the worst being there is no cure and it spreads easily(tobacco mosaic virus is the most famous). my guess is you have a couple different fungal infections. they can be cleared up by using an oxidate or copper fungicides. your cacti look strong but they look like they have been kept in very poor conditions. almost all of them are off in color. my primary concern would be #5 in row 2 because that looks very infected. I would keep it away from my other cacti as I treated it so it doesn't spread. it might be too infected to cure but it probably wont die right away either. the treatments are good to use as a preventative as well as a treatment so win win.

I don't think that's available in my country but there deffinetly is a copper fungicide. I also wasn't aware the fungal infection can spread between cacti... I'd hate to loose my collection due to one shitty plant so I'm going to have to look into it I think

yes it can definitely spread. through spores and direct contact. I would treat all of them and keep a good eye on them. especially number two and five row two. those ones look like the same fungus that has killed my cacti before. but it also could be widespread. they look a lot like corking or scaring so its hard for a non expert(like me) to tell 100%

Best to cut out any rotting sections with a sharp knife.  Make sure you get it all and let the cactus callus over in a dry environment.  No need for fungicide.

If it is soft and rotting then its best to cut it out.  If it is firm and drying out on its own then it is ok to leave it and not use fungicide.  A cut piece will go on to grow and more than replace what is lost.  But if you let rot get out of hand it can do a lot of damage or even kill the plant.  I like to cut out any bad sections of a cutting that have active rot, then let everything callus, and then plant the cutting.  In that order. But ymmv.  Best luck whatever you do.

well a lot of the marks are there to stay. as the cactus grows they will fade but they probably wont 100% disappear. I wouldn't make cuts unless you see rot. I would keep the cleanest looking ones a bit away from the ones that look like they may have issues. water splash from watering is how a lot of things spread. just keep an eye on them and if you notice marks spreading, then take action. good luck man! good job on the copper fungicide, its something that every cacti grower should have on deck.

We've all been there.

Your main priority is getting them to root. The faster they do this then the faster they get growing. Actively growing plants are generally healthy and out compete any minor spots.

If anything crops up while they're rooting then get back to us, and we'll go about diagnosing. It's just a waiting game now. It can be the hardest part.

I promise it will be a huge fuss though once it spreads and you start losing cacti. which you will if you leave that untreated. ur advising someone to avoid simple gardening techniques to prevent an obvious and wrather aggressive fungal infection. i dont get where your coming from.

rot is from fungus and bacteria. also it doesn't usually show up on new growth until its too late and the whole cactus is dieing or it has reached the core. they wont just grow out of it. if you have not had a cacti die from fugal rot in ten years then you are either very lucky and have immaculate growing conditions or you don't know how to identify it very well when it kills a cactus. they are very common. how is protecting your plants ever not necessary?

I personally have ten years of cacti growing experience myself and 20 of gardening experience in general. not trying to have a pissing contest but simply suggesting that you dont know everything. you dont have to listen to someone tell you information that you dont want to hear, but the OP deserves correct information.

here is some good information you wont find on google:

Bacterial and Fungal Infections
Bacterial and fungal infections are opportunistic. They typically come from the soil or surroundings, waiting for the right conditions, in which they then flourish. Entering through wounds in the skin and roots, they typically establish quickly. Pathogens entering through cell walls in the roots or outer chlorenchymal layers are facilitated by abiotic conditions such as a localized nitrogen toxicity or localized calcium deficiency. Calcium isn’t mobile within the plant, and localized deficiencies are often first seen on the lower portions of the column, or in the actively growing tips. Free ammonia in the soil or media may adversely affect the roots, lower portions of the column and areoles.
Bacterial infections like Erwinia often begin with a raised blister or bump and are a symptom of abiotic cause; akin to blossom-end rot in tomato. The bacteria produce enzymes such as pectinase to decompose adjacent cell walls, expanding the infection. Left untreated the infection can advance, working deeper into the parenchyma and excreting a black bio-liquid through the wound. Treatment often involves opening the deeper wounds and cleaning them out. In some cases, these bacterial infections will resolve without taking any special action.
Fungal infections are generally more difficult and typically classified as blights. They can be treated with copper-based fungicides, a Bordeaux mix was found to be effective over a longer period of time than fixed-copper sprays like copper oxychloride. Organic treatments which have been found helpful, include Bacillus Thuringiensis and di-potassium salts of phosphoric acid. (Experiment for plant compatibility and phytotoxicity before applying any new product to your plants on a large scale.) Pathogens causing blight include anthracnose, fusarium, phomopsis, phytophthora, pythium and others. Infections like fusarium and phytophthora can hollow out or infect a Trichocereus from the inside, sometimes destroying a plant within days. These infections enter through damage in the roots or other injury sites. Pathogens like anthracnose and phomopsis may only cause surface cankers and lesions, though can take a plant over given the right conditions. Warm, humid weather or saturated soils and media promote these diseases. Overhead watering may also contribute as the pathogens residing in the soil are splashed onto the lower portions of the plant.

I've read that and some of my closest friends are the people you speak of. Also, no microscopy or biopsies have been taken. This is all based on visual observation. I want to see micrographs.

I just think you're being a little pedantic. Over reacting to fairly basic problem, that will correct itself over time.

My proof. Read through the thousands of posts and see the results of the people I've coached. It's all there. Most of the newskool bite my work and some of my teks are standard in the community.

Edited to add: I certainly don't know everything and never claimed that I do. I learn new things each and every day. I'm not an authority and I don't have my head up my own arse. Just want to make that clear. I'm as n00b as you, the next guy and the up and comers entering the field.

I know gee bee has done some microscopy, but that is getting way out of my league and one would have to ask her or someone for that info most likely. you are probably right about me being a bit pedantic and to each his own but I tend to go better safe than sorry. mainly because I have been sorry and treating with copper is just so easy. I hate fungal infections on cacti. they spread fast and are hard to notice early. I diddnt start out growing cactus with fungicides. its something that I learned to do because I was having fugal problems and losing cacti. whether or not it will grow out is up to the growers own speculation i guess. But, there is in fact a fungal infection in at least two of those cacti. yes, it is visual confirmation but i know what to look for. whether to treat it or try to let it grow out is up to the grower as well obviously. but i can say 100% that there is a fungal infection. my cacti diddnt grow out of that same infection (i know...no microscopy but trust me its the same).

also i have seen pics of the OP's setup and there are cacti stacked above cacti, this is a pedantic (lol) no no. when watering, the excess water will flow onto the cacti underneath and spread infection.

anyways, to each his own. we all learn in our own ways. all know different aspects of growing from issues we have had to deal with. btw I appreciate you being civil, I like a good conversation but really diddnt want to fight or anything. i honestly just love cacti and growing in general and want to help. noobs unite haha much love

Just to be clear this is one of the cacti I would be most worried about.

notice the abnormal scarring appearance. that is the fungus. the orange is a clear indicator. a closer pic would reveal tiny black dots on the surface. those are the fruit bodies that release spores.

That cacti looks to be PC anyways and should be separated or just tossed imo. that's it im done lol

For the record I now how Coreflute sheets under the racks in the greenhouse so when watered the water flows to the end of the rack and then onto the ground so it's impossible for water from above, to hit those below.

I have given them a spray with the copper. So time will tell if it's effective.

awesome good job, sorry to jump to conclusions. should probably hit it with copper again at some point. probably wont kill it 100 % in one go. I think you should be able to tell when its dead though, mine seamed to go from yellowy white to a grey over time. greenhouse is awesome btw. they are gonna be monsters in no time. good luck dude!
