A few Pedro questions + ID request
    #3735144 - 02/05/05 12:44 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

First off, take a look at my dude here. I know this to be T. Pachanoi:

I understand that he is growing thin like that due to over-watering. My First question is: will he fill back out now that I've stopped watering so much? Or will he fill out only at the top and possibly break in the thin part eventually?

Next question:

Is that a pup coming up? And if so, will cutting off a portion of the parent for personal use stunt the pup in anyway? I would like to avoid that.
Also, I am new at explaining away cactus chopping to curious neighbors and friends. What's your method for dealing with the inevitable "um, wtf happened to your cactus?"question? Or do people even ask?

And lastly:
What kinda of cacti are these growing in my front yard?

They look kinda Pedro-like, but I am far from knowledgeable on the topic.

I don't understand how you are supposed to ID the exact species and sub species.. I've seen what I think to be pedros at the store, but I am unsure, so I never buy them..
If it looks like a pedro, is there a good chance it can contain goodies?

nunciate, the thin growth is etiolation, the thinning of the column caused by inadequate light levels.

The large plant in your yard is 100% T. pachanoi.

Thanks, Michael.
Can you tell me if the first one will fatten out ever? Its been getting about 8hrs of light per day since October. Its behind the house which faces south. And I give it a quarter turn every two weeks or so. Is that not enough or does it just take forever (especially in winter) to show a difference? Its a nice specimen and I'd like to keep it, otherwise I will use it as for my personal journeys and take a cutting from the ones out in the yard to pot...
[edit] and just to be sure on those in the front yard. They a much lighter green than the potted Pedro and the spines are almost non-existant. Are you guys sure those are T. Pachanoi? I don't want the wrong alkaloids in the wrong place, if you know what I mean.

They are most definatly Trichocereus pachanoi, the more you learn about the genus Trichocereus you will find that there are so many interchanging trates due to unknown cross pollination, different growth patterns for different conditions etc and that specimens that look quite different are often considered the same plant.

there are tons of trichocereus hybrids due to cross pollination but pedros in general tend to be spinier when they're younger...

I told people that i was mowing the lawn by my cactus garden and hit a bunch of stones, the stones damaged the cactus and they started to go soft (reasonably true actually)
i just told people that i cut the damaged sections out and threw them away.... then replanted the undamaged top sections....

cut the plant about six inches from the bottom at a slant so that rain will not puddle up on the cut. The pup will take over and grow like crazy. The cactus has a root system to support the big part but once all that energy goes to the pup it will grow like a mofo

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

Pedros dont fill out, if theres a thin spot its there until you trim it off. Just let that pedro fatten up again and put on a foot or two before choping.  You should take 2-4 cuttings of that pedro in your yard then and root them in individual pots with good soil.

Its normal to trim your garden evey once in a while man  No ones going to check if you threw em out unless they know the magic secret. Even if they do notice some cactus missing and you wandering home at 6 in the morning, not everones a nark.

Thanks for the input, everyone. It is much appreciated. I have already taken some cuttings from that big one in the front yard. One of the stalks fell over about a week ago so I chopped'm down into about four pieces and planted them. Somehow the remainder ended up in a pot on the stove the other night. My roommate wanted to throw it out. Glad I convinced her to wait long enough for me to get an ID here.
Thanks again, folks.
