Switching from Polyfil..
    #25794428 -

Well as I'm starting to do more and more r sesch time. I want to start doing this right. I havent had a problem with the polyfil.. but I want to switch to SFD lids.

Wheres the best place to buy cheap material that'll work? I was looking on amazon and they're like $10 ... I'm sure i could go to a craft store and purchase something similar for close to nothing? Just wondering what type of material or whatever I should ask for. I'm only doing one hole in the center of the jar.. for air exchange. I don't need a injection port. Also, what's the best bit to use for the hole?

Thanks ahead of time!

SFDs are made from very specific materials. It's not just some random material cut out and fit onto your lids. Most SFDs are made from a hydrophobic filter material with pores smaller than 0.22 um.

If you want a different filter material, and you can't access proper SFDs, then go with felt.

Mmm.  Well I really don't have a problem with spending the money if it's the right way to go about it.

Could you maybe message me a vendor or something where I could purchase some?

Almost all the sponsors sell them https://www.shroomery.org/sponsors.php. From the first few on that page I found the following:

  • https://www.shroomsupply.com/air-filtration/synthetic-filter-disc-29-mm
  • https://www.mycohaus.com/search?q=filter

You can also find them online in Ebay or Amazon.

Dont switch from poly. You said yourself you have no problems with it so why change everything up? Just wanna spend some money?

sfd are generally made from pressed polyester, not a special material. It is literally the same exact material as polyfil.

Absolutely not. I just want things to done correctly. The ONLY problem I have had with polyfil is it getting into my grain during a shake. It hasn't really caused a problem other than me seeing it and it bothering me lol

Of course it is a special material. You can't just go to your local fabric shop (or craft store as OP wanted) and buy it. It's not just pressed polyester. It has been heavily processed to ensure uniformity and that its to spec.

Some may be made from polyester, but they are also made from cellulose and glass fibre.

If you think they are doing much other than putting a big wad of material into a hydraulic press and pressing a log and slicing it up then you are mistaken.

well maybe a little more to it than that haha
it was interesting looking in to it though.

Just stick with polyfil though don't be like me and change everything up every day!

lol, I was gonna say it's a bit of an oversimplification, like throwing rocks and charcoal into a furnace and getting steel out.

But, yeh, polyfill for the win. @OP It takes a bit of getting used to, but after your first dozen or so lids, you'll be doing it easily. I have some jars with whatman filters that I was given for free that took a bit more work than shoving some polyfill into a hole.

How often if at all do you replace your poly fill? If its still tight in the hole and dry it still good right? If you dont replace it often then why sfd? (Honestly im asking cause i dont know myself its not some rhetorical assholeisim.) I use poly fill rn but if i got to redo these lids then i want something more permanent.

For sure. I'll just stick with what I got. I just need to get better at stuffing it better and trimming it more well so it doesn't get into my grain during my shakes.

Anyway. I did go and buy some plastic mason jars at least. So at least I'm sure I made one good move other than the metal lid and ring lol .

Personally. I have a huge fucking bag so I just replace them. But I'm more than sure you don't have to.

It comes down to personal preference. I replace when the polyfill starts looking tatty, loses colour, or it looks like something was growing on it. Some replace every 1-5 cycles. I have a few jars with SFDs. I hate dealing with glue.

I do a periodic quality test on my polyfill stuffing skills with agar. I take a few jars aside, put some agar in (1-2cm deep), sterilize, then leave the jars with my colonizing grain jars. If anything grows on the agar, I know my technique (or filter - I've tested a few different ones) needs work.

Meh yeah. That's what I need to work on. (I havent had a contam yet)... but I rather have q high success rate by doing things right. I just need to get it like more in a ball and stuff it more tightly and cleanly.

SFD's are quite nice man, they last a long time and are inexpensive.
I get mine from Fungi Perfecti. 99.97% efficient down to .3 microns. Pretty much reusable for life.

I use those nice "autoclavable plastic" lids too. They're super cheap. I carefully make a 1/2" hole in the center and pop the proper size SFD up underneath. One piece lids are so nice to use.

Here's some photos of how I like to do it- there are 3 1/2" holes because it's a gallon spawn jar. I melt the holes nicely with the flat back of a drill bit heated by propane torch, they kept cracking when I drilled thru. It works nicer it turned out. It's an old lid so it's a bit dirty.

If I don't have enough SFDs around, I just used SFDs on my grain masters and use plastic lids with poly fill on the reviving jars.
I really prefer the plastic lids because they don't rust and are one piece lids.

Hell yeah man thanks for that. I'm probably just going to end up doing the sfd. Looks cleaner to me lol.

These are the lids I just purchased for my mason jars. Hope these work out..
