Why did my caps turn black?
    #25789245 -

They were looking good the night before and then the next day some had turned a dark color.  Are they still safe?

The cake in question is the middle one on the left.  Here it is yesterday.

This morning I check it and it looks like this.

Is this normal?  I harvested them and they are drying.  Here are more pics.  Please comment.  This is my first grow.  All constructive comments welcome.

Those are spores that your shrooms dropped.  It's perfectly alright.

Oh damn, now I feel like a fool.  I thought that was why the top of the cake turned brown but I didn't consider that the mushies were getting showered with spores too!  :facepalm3:

Thank you for the quick response!

Haha don't worry about it. We're all learning! Nice fruits though  . Not sure about your setup, but the long stipe could be an indicator of low FAE (or low light, or other things for that matter)

I have an active air pump running right now.  It's set on a timer to turn on every 4 hours for half an hour.  Should I just drill holes and let room air do its thing?

FAE is a constant thing. So 1/2 hour every 4 hours really isn't going to cut it IMO. Yeah, look up a proper SGFC tek on this site. Regularly spaced holes on all 6 sides, lifted up of the ground. The holes give all the FAE required passively, and keeping it up off the ground means the holes in the bottom can allow an updraft through the moistened perlite which keeps the FC at a high RH so your cakes don't dry out too quickly. No need for fanning.

My terrarium is in the same room as my cannabis plants which are currently on a 18x6 light cycle.  I have the terrarium covered up by a thick blanket so they can operate on a 12x12 light cycle.  Does covering up the terrarium mess with the FAE?

Yeah that would restrict the FAE. By too much? Not sure, but likely. 18/6 isn't as ideal as 12/12. But from what I could find, it will work. I'd say that FAE is more important than light for cubes. I'd be interested to see what other people think about the trade-off, but that's my two cents.

I mean, I'm getting potent caps with this set up.  I'm spawning to bulk next grow but I'm very happy with this cake yield.  I had a very nice trip last night  (the onslaught sucked - 1 hour of discomfort and stomach ache) but the trip was nice afterwards.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you should definitely change anything. Just trying to offer some food for thought. You do you :hatsoff: :leaving:

Edit: oh, and I should have been more clear: some of the stipes look a little long. Mostly though, they look good

I wanna say 4-6" clearance around the sgfc is enough. Honestly I think they look great.

Didn't see clear answer here. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20195542#20195542

And keep that thermometer out before it breaks. Room temp is fine and rh reading is inaccurate.

Thanks all for the input.  I think I am just going to let this grow finish out.  I am done with cakes after this and moving to bulk spawn now.  It was fun to start out with PF Tek but I feel like I'm ready for a bigger challenge (and a bigger yield).
