Why are these fruits turning blue?!?
    #1448530 - 04/11/03 01:55 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

My FOAF's 9er tek casing appears to be sick :frown:  Any idea what this is?

The big picture:

Cap closeup (notice the blueing where the cap meets the stem):

And here's a closeup of the substrate... lots of blue here:

My FOAF tells me these fruits have not changed size in about 3 days.  Are they contamed??  Do they need to be pitched or can they be picked and dried?

Uber (who's FOAF is very sad)

curious. *bump* back to the top so someone may help ya.

that looks to me like either bruising (but none picked? nothing dropped on it?) blue dye or an unknown contam.

My friend does not believe it is a contamination.

Had you recently given them a heavy misting?

Do not toss it out. Watch and wait.

The bluing around the veil means it will soon tear away and the cap will open.

The bluing at the surface looks like bruising from burning/drying. Do you have a lamp or a fan on it? Did you scrape the surface to get an even pinset? This can also cause bruising, but it looks like what I've already mentioned. I've read that contams can also cause bruising but I've never seen it.

If it is burned, it will be very succeptable to contams so be careful and jump on it if you see any green or soggy wetness.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies all. I'm now fairly certain it was due to low humidity in my FOAF's big ol' wardrobe closet terrarium. Much thanks to IES for quickly answering my query late last night on IRC.

My FOAF's humidifier died a while back and he's been forced to do the best he can with a large tray of perlite, 2 airstone bubblers, and hand misting. Suffice to say that a 60x30x16 terrarium requires a lot of humidity. He worries how badly he has dried out his casings and cased strawbed by removing the humidifer from the equation. The good news is a new cool mist will be going in within 24 hours. For the meantime he has increased his mistings to attempt to compensate and has noticed new growth in the previously stalled fruits shown above.

The blue you are seeing at the bases of the cap where the veil attaches to the cap is a sign that the veils are about to tear letting the cap open up . This is a good thing , is a sign of "good potency" , and letting you know almost time to harvest .
In the photo with the young pins caps turning completly blue is aborts , pick them if you can now before the caps turn black , you can eat them or dry them , but do so before those caps turn mushy and black .
All in all looks great , almost time to harvest that flush .
