Mixed yields, poor/zero 2nd flush
    #25765194 -

Hi all, I'm pretty stoked because I grew my first monotubs and got fairly good results: 350g wet from the first 2 tubs but only 150 and 200g from the next 2 tubs. This was surprising because the first 2 tubs had no gypsum  but the next 2 tubs did (powdered drywall in fact). Otherwise it was just horse manure and coir (±25% by volume). Temp was ideal 22-25 deg C throughout the growing period.

I'm going to start again and wondered if I should do anything different.

One question I have is whether it's necessary to line the tubs with black plastic as my book teaches? I didn't do it because I don't understand the reason for it? My first 2 tubs had opaque sides and bottom but the second 2 were transparent. (I'll post some pics). Could this explain low yields?

After harvesting first flush I soaked the substrate for 24 hours in water and returned them to the fruiting chamber. Only 1 tub from the first 2 grew some new shrooms (100g). The second 2 tubs are doing nothing as far as a second flush goes.

Next time I'll use new gypsum not drywall and am thinking of adding brown rice flour but am not so keen because it increases risk of contamination (my book says). I believe I should be getting good results (±400g first flush and multiple flushes) just with manure + gypsum + coir. That's what the book says it should be??

PS: Just reviewed previous threads on this sort of question. Seems to be differences in opinion on subsequent flushes as a meaningful phenomenon at all? BTW, the book I refer to is The Psilocybin Mushroom Bible by Haze and Mandrake, not real names.

Pics of my first and second tubs, both showing first flushes which are poor in the second round (round tub)

If you're working with spores and not clones/isolated cultures it's pretty common for the yields to be very sporadic.

The lining of the tub helps side and bottom pinning, especially during later flushes as the coir shrinks, it's more likely for mushrooms to grow off the sides and bottom, the lining helps reduce that.

Changing your substrate ratios around won't help too much as moisture content and genetics will.

Forget the book, learn everything here. Use just oats and coir. Come over to the oat side...

Hey there, welcome! That sounds frustrating. Also, your yields sound pretty low in general. I recommend going here and reading all this: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24297804

Throw away that book, it's outdated and will hurt you more than help you. (As the quirky one said)

Also, I recommend moving over to shoeboxes if you're happy with those yeild numbers. Those are lower numbers than I get per shoebox right now, and I only put one pint of grain per shoebox. Less space, less time, less hassle, and I get better results. I doubt I've been growing significantly longer than you, so you should see huge improvements moving forward.

Good luck!

Rye. Not to be fooled by Galactic Empire you should. Rye is the way to the right side  And coir. Coir FTW.

That is long time to dunk my friend. I believe few hours is considered maximum for bulk.

Hi all, thanks for these replies, tips and encouragement  Lots to consider, perhaps first to change nothing except genetics for better first flush yields and reduce dunking time for second flushes. Then I can try the other routes you mention such as oats, rye...

I did eventually manage to upload my pics and you can see the obvious difference between  the pic posted by Shaperdreaming. Any comments on what you see?
