Questions about "Mini pleat Micron HEPA filter + also using a rotective grill for Flow hood

Hey all

So I have two questions.
As I've posted before I am downsizing my Flow Hood, I love my 18 x 24" cabinet but since I am no longer in the same house I don't have a permanent space for it. Even with the handles it's bulky (it's 26" wide by 27" deep + 20" tall and top heavy)- I can't move it around easy especially with my chronic injury. 12 x 24 will suit my needs just as well.

The HEPA filter I am thinking of buying is one of those "Mini pleat micron" ones, like this: https://fungi.com/collections/cultivation-tools/products/24-x-12-x-5-8-mini-pleat-micron-filter

Says they're packed tighter and it has less resistance.
Anyone ever bought one of these? Likes/dislikes/further info on it?


My next question is about those protective grills for the HEPA. I've seen people build hoods with the grill over the HEPA so you don't crush the pins if you bump it.
Does it disrupt the flow, do they collect contaminants, do you gotta wipe it down before use or can you just run it like normal -that's the kinda stuff I'm wondering about
Also if you do have one, what did you use?

Look up the filter through the manufacturer they explicitly say they're made for laminar flow applications.

I'm buying one of these anyways, what I'm really curious about is if they are much more fragile than the pin style HEPA. No matter how careful I try to be it seems I eventually bump the filter (my dominant hand was injured real bad a long time ago I drop shit a lot)- little bumps aren't a big deal I just round out the aluminum again, but if it gets hit hard enough it tears up the filter in that spot

That's why I'm thinking about putting a grill on this cabinet.

Ive had the same concerns about the protective grates but never found any amswers besides seeing them operate and work. There's no documentation or science i could find behind it or to even verify it doesn't mess up the flow. But ive seen a lot of hoods in professional settings with different kinds of protective metal grates

I guess I'll see when the filter arrives if that is something I want to do or not. Maybe I'll make it easy to remove.

I think for me sacrificing the extra 6" height will be worth the hood being more portable, lighter + easy to store.
I can always tilt spawn bags, not that I use them much. Really I would prefer a wider hood than a taller one anyways.
My filter was practically new and I sold it, and my blower is a Dayton 1TDT2 which is much better suited for a 12 x 24" filter face anyways so I just need to buy a sheet of maple.

The protective grills are fine and not detrimental to laminar flow at all, without it there's always a chance of damaging the filter which is not an option for me considering the price of HEPA filters, my new 24x48" filter cost just over $500 New Zealand dollars.

24 x 48 is a nice size man!
You built your FH I take it? What did you use for the grate?
I haven't had a chance to look around yet it'd be cool to have an idea of what it's called or where to get it etc

Metal grate is what it's called go to home depot its by the metal find one that looks appropriate for flow and protection.

Yes, it's really nice to have that space to work in.
My hood is a fairly highly modified FFU, I'm using it for plant tissue culture (micropropagation) and for working with fungal cultures.
The company I got the filter from has options for the protective grill.
I'll take a photo of the hood at some stage:cool:

My filter came from the factory with wire mesh protecting the filter.
It'll be called "hardware cloth" at the home depot.

I had put it up for sale already (minus the blower) and someone had bought it, but even partially disassembled the bulk and weight made it not worth it so I just sold him the filter (was very new).

I still have the cabinet + blower housing, it's built very solid, made of Aspen.
If you are interested and near by ( central NY) could pick it up PM me

Yes that is more like it- and I wouldn't even have to cut it. That helps!

On my last hood I just used wood trim to hold the filter in. If I attach it over that it will sit out from the filter a little - I don't have a ruler handy for reference, I dunno less than 1CM + the thickness of the grate
Anyone know if it's a problem if the grate sits out from the filter some?
I suppose I could use thin metal trim instead of wood this time, fix the grate to that and it would be pretty tight to the filter

A grate like that won't cause turbulence?:shrug:

My filter came from flanders with this mesh over the filter face.

I've always wondered if it would collect dust/contams that might blow loose at some point into your media
I mean I suppose you could give the front a quick wipe with a little ISO on a paper towel
I used to hit my filter face lightly with Lysol and let it sit a minute before I turned it on to scrub

I imagine that would be the best you could do unless it was easy to remove

look at metal on the hood in this video. this is what I'm used to seeing in all the labs ive ever been in

stuff that looks like it wouldn't work basically

I'm surprised that doesn't create turbulence.
Certainly more aesthetically pleasing than the cheap looking wire mesh they came on my filter.
