P. galindoi sclerotia: should I harvest it mid Feb?
    #25760176 -

Hey Guys,

Hope you are doing well!
I have read Stonesun's Comprehensive Sclerotia Cultivation guide and it is absolutely awesome.

I have a question though I transfered P. Galindoi agar to grains (malt/barley that I used to brew beer with) on 6 Oct. 2018. It took forever to colonize and I suspect it was fighting some contam as my other jar did contam from the same batch. It finally fully colonized end of Nov 2018.

My brother is coming to visit mid Feb. and it has been years since I last tripped and even longer since we tripped together and I would really like to take some stones with him but don't want to waste the bag if it is not ready.

It looks like it has formed some stones already, this is what it looks like currently:

I am planning to fruit it after I have harvested the stones.

Cheers!

I’d harvest the truffles after I fruit them. I had much better truffle production this way. Good luck to you:mushroom2:

Yeah probably not but I’m not seeing many truffles. Most of them appear on the outside of the grain. I had some bags that wouldn’t produce but it produced a bunch after I spawned it. It will probably still produce more if u decide to fruit after you harvest, I’m just not sure your going to have enough there for 2 people if u harvest first. Unless there’s some big truffles I’m not seeing.

Looks pretty contaminated.  Bacterial.  Im not sure if its safe to eat them or not.  Some other more experienced opinions could offer better guidance.  I know they get funky looking after a few months so its hard to tell.

Does your bag have a breathing port? Looks like it’s vacuum sealed

Yes it is a filter patch bag bought from a mushroom supplier.

Don't think there is any contamination in there.
Nothing sticky or smudgy in the bag and if compared with other picks it looks pretty normal.

It has a little yellowing but most truffle bags aren’t the prettiest. Just make sure it has a strong mushroom smell when u open it

Thanks!

Will just have to be patient for a little while longer.
Some APE jars also starting to colonize now so hopefully soon all this waiting will pay off

Think it looks this way on the photo because of how the plastic is "molded" around the mycelium.
If the bag is pulled away from the side there is nothing sticking to it.

Will give it a good smell when I decide to open it.

Cheers!

It doesn't look right. Never heard of using malted barley. I bet it's a real mushy mess after you brew with it. It doesn't look like it will make any stones at all and there isn't any visible in the pics. How old is it? If it hasnt made any stones by month 2 it probably wont make any stones ever.

edit: oh I see it is over 3 months old. Man throw that trash away.

Your first red flag was it took forever to colonize. ATL7 colonize pretty fast.

I had 6 month old mexicana jars that produced 0 truffles till I spawned it. If it smells ok I’d at lest try to spawn it and see what happens

it was not used/boiled malt.
It is very much the same thing as rye grains.

Wonder what could make them not want to stone in the jar? They must not like something about the grain in that case.

Yeah I’m really  not sure, I was going to throw them out but went ahead and spawned them. Ended up with mushrooms and truffles.
