sclerotia formation casing/invitro
    #2483836 - 03/30/04 03:52 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

When growing sclerotia of Psilocybe Mexicana and tampanesis, sclerotia can be grown inside the spawn jar or in a casing layer in a terrarium. Which method is more efficient/prolific?

p.s. Has anyone ever grown these species on dung/straw?

cheers all,

-Odium

if you're aiming specifically for sclerotia i would think the jars or bags, but if you also would like to fruit it and eat some crazy mushies as well as sclerotia then i would go w/ the casing

Actually, thinking about it, i've never tried the fruitbodies of those species, only the sclerotia... are they any good?

btw, quick poll: Mexicana A or tampanesis, which do you like better? Mex is my fave (controvertially i suspect)

I like Mexicana.

Casings work... and the sclerotia grows big and fast... but some casing layer will get in it.

I think casings produce the largest sclerotia... 'cause of the extra water.

Casing layer sclerotia do get large and grow fast, but harvesting is more difficult(cleaning). I found straw produced some real whoppers!!! But the sclerotia was fused with the straw, IE you had to break the sclerotia up to get rid of the straw.

INVITRO produces great results and easier harvesting/cleaning if grown on Rye grass seed.

IME multispore inoculations result in very incosistent yields from jar to jar. In my last effort with multispores, Harvest was delayed by a month, and my yields were less then half that of clone inoculated jars. I believe if you isolate and clone the best producing jar, and inoculate all jars with that clone, you can get AVERAGE Yields of 1 oz dry per cup of ryegrass seed. My multispores are no where near that.

The fruits of both the tampanensis and the mexicana are more potent then the sclerotia.

I prefer the mexicana overall to the tampanensis. I think the tampanensis is way to inbreed, At least the one I have.

Spore germination is slow with the mexicana!!!! Soaking in water(syringe) for at least a week speeds things up.

lol, too true, it sucks the way that there was only ever one wild sample

Thanks very much Teonan, that's some great info

Not to hijack, my own thread, but your advice prompts me to ask another question: when using the word "rye" without the qualifier you helpfully added, are people usually talking about rye grass seed, or rye berries?

When talking about "grass seed", are most people referring to rye grass seed?

And finally, any tips on what kinda shop to pick up lots of cheap rye grass seed in? I used to live near a grain merchant, and that rocked, but since i got myself urbanised i'm lacking a good source.

Many thanks,

-Odium

Rye grass seed is LAWN seed. This is why it is also called grass seed. Go to any gardening center. Find the lawn section and look at sead... any grass seed without fungicide will work... but a rye grass mix is traditional.

If you ask for Rye Grass Seed at the gardening store... most folks will just look at you funny. Lawn seed is what you want.

Yes most lawn seed mixies are a combination of annual and perrenial rye grass, with other seeds present.

If you can find just annual ryegrass seed it is cheaper. Kmart has both types.
It is always overpriced in the city!!!

They have to lable it if it has pesticide residue.

Rye= rye grain
Ryegrass seed= rye grass seed
