The compost pile is so hot because of its size. That cow-melting heat starts at about 3x3x3. If you were to make a shallow rim around the pile, the mycelium should do well there, and possibly tap into the heat of the pile as needed during winter. Throw a tarp over it if needed for stealth or surface conditions.
