Flame sterilizing - sterilization of JARS themselves - ignite jar (or microwave sterilise?)
    #25710374 -

Hello, fellow humans.
My first post.
I promise I am a human , just like you, and definitely not an alien impersonating a human for interplanetary gain. Nothing suspicious here.

I am new to growing, and just currently researching.

I have a question :
Has anybody tried flame sterilizing JARS themselves ?
(preferably with success).

I have just tried igniting a glass jar to flame sterilize it.
I poured some methylated spirits in it, set it on fire, and used a small electric fan to convect air into the mouth of the jar to keep the flame going.

The result was a raging hot jar.
(couldn't find my thermometer, but touched jar for a split second, and it instantly carbonized a callous on my finger).

Only a tiny bit of spirits (a few mL) was required for a long lasting blue flame.

I am curious about flame sterilizing jars because I am both a bit lazy, impatient,
(both qualities frowned upon in these forums, I realize) -- and I like efficiency,
and this seems more efficient in time and energy resources than pressure cookers or steaming jars for a couple of hours etc.

I have searched these forums and not found an answer.
When I search variations of "flame sterilize jars" , I get approx 7600 results, of which I have viewed the headings of 1000 and skim-read through about 15.
Search result headings got increasingly less relevant after page one.

As an afterthought :
I suspect microwaves might be another possibility for sterilization, for energy efficiency?
Anybody had success with that?
Of course, microwaves , being a kitchen appliance, would themselves be filled with contaminants, and therefore probably be a bad idea, but maybe someone has a workaround, or some kind of imaginative setup (I have not researched this here).

Welcome but that sounds dangerous!

Also you can't sterilize any grain inside it with flames so what's the point?

I was being rude to a new guy, I apologize. We all have to start somewhere. read your ass off and a pressure cooker is your best friend. Really can’t do shit without it.  This may be a dumb question but are you familiar with the “search out forum”  at the top of the screen? Use that instead of the other one, it has lots more info. I ask because when I started I didn’t know.

started a wood fire in a pint jar once and it promptly cracked. Not to mention the fact that this has no practical application I can think of.

gonna load up some grain/brf jars and start a fire under them? i can't even

Please read up more avoid your thoughts. Pressure cook to do your work.

So what people sterilize are our spawn, grains mostly. Now if you try to sterilize with dry heat, like a fire, you'll just end up burning everything before it becomes sterile. Rendering it useless to grow mushrooms. This is why we pressure sterilize with steam iirc.

Microwave won't sterilize anything either.

Just get a pressure cooker.

You can not sterilize without pressure. The water in the substrate will never exceed 100°C unless you pressure it. You can do the PF Tek which doesn't require a pressure cooker. A microwave, as a lot of people say, has no room in this hobby.
Seems like you are not familiar with the basic principles. Read read read...

Could try a flame thrower? Maybe a stick of dynamite? Or just do what all us boring cultivators do and pressure cook your jars.

It's boring and awfully obvious and simple, but hey, it gets the job done.

Do enough research until you think this idea sounds stupid then start growing mushrooms.

I might use this idea next time my dog needs a bath.:trippy: :stopflaming:

There are reasons things are done the way they are... sure, innovation stems from outside of the box, but dry heat and microwaves aren't exactly "new" ideas... I don't understand what you're trying to accomplish, just not buying a PC? You do realize that the jar is sterilized with the grain right? Scratching my head,  help me understand the train here plz'r

As others have pointed out you need to sterilize your grain. So while your method of "sterilizing" your jars may indeed get them clean, it won't help you at all unless your grain is sterile. And your technique won't do anything for your grain except burn it. Again as others have stated, dry heat won't help here. You actually need the heat and pressure of the steam in order to successfully sterilize.

Facepalm.

So lets take this step by step. IN an open air unsanitary environment you want to light a jar on fire and blow no sterile air into it? How might you sterilize your grains?

Probably come off them mushies first because your going to have to get a pressure cooker.

Hi all !
Thanks for all the various responses.
Thank you also for indulging my definite complete and massive ignorance.
-- and I deserve the flack and sarcasm I get for inflicting my ignorance on the forum --
but it was a good excuse to get started here , and dip my feet in.

Okay, I will get a pressure cooker !
No big deal, I was just hoping to save energy (and also misread some short reading I did).

Having read through all the comments, and having watched a few videos featuring the wonderful Tom and Wendy Wiandt,
such as this

....as well as reading all your posts :
I now understand a little bit more about what you are all saying, the (now obvious) necessity of sterilising grain / substrate, and about the process.
(be assured that I am face-palming myself for not being able to see the screamingly obvious before asking).

I was previously reading the brown rice method of growing by (the well known?) Steven Pollock,
and I don't think he mentioned about sterilising grain, and that was much the extent of my reading.
I also read a couple of guides which seemed to focus on sterilising the containers (obviously didn't read far enough).

Maybe if anybody can recommend their personal favourite book / books about applied mycology / mushie growing,
then I'll get started reading something a bit more comprehensive and in-depth at some point (possibly written by some kind of "authority?"),
to avoid more goofy questions from me in future.

More in-depth sciency recommendations also appreciated, but don't know when I'll have the time for something highly academic on this topic (as much as I'd like to) .... but nice to know what people think.

Is Stamets "Mushroom Cultivator" etc. a good place to start?
While I would love to get a bit further into the science sometime,
I'm really just looking to produce a small crop for very moderate and occasional personal use, as in, enough for myself and maybe a couple of buddies, to have a supply to use possibly once a month at most, probably once every 2 or 3 months.

Even just as an alternative to the alcohol-centric society and cultures that I live within,
among various other reasons I have for wanting a small crop on hand.

Cheers !
=======================
at TheSunBeam :
Yes, I definitely did search the forums using "search our forum" (I can't even find any other kind of search box):
...I was hoping to find the answer to my question, which was clearly inquiring in the wrong direction with the wrong logic and lack of research to begin with 0_0
========================
Everybody else :
Your pure information and pure info + sarcasm + time is all much appreciated (:
I got something out of all of it.
Ta.

If you're just looking to produce a small crop the brf cakes would probably suite you perfectly. If you're looking for a little more than try a bulk method. I'd consider myself very new at this and was able to follow all the teks I chose just fine. It helps to have the correct equipment. As far as further reading goes, if you aren't looking into the scientific aspect of mycology then just read these forums. I tried bulk my first time around so I recommend bodhisatta's teks. To me, they are the simplest teks to follow.

A bit late to the party but...

What you were initially suggesting is along the lines of dry heat sterilization. It's not as commonly used as wet heat but has its place, eg for water-sensitive instruments, glassware, powders... obviously as pointed out not for media! 170 degC, 1 hour, no alcohol needed (or wanted!). So for example, if for some reason you wanted to sterilise vermiculite or perlite while keeping it dry, dry heat would be a suitable method.
