Small Heater
    #2566211 -

I innoculated my mycobags 2 days ago and today my little vornado heater/fan broke down
so long story short, i need a cheap replacement
It needs to fit within a cardboard box maybe 18X18X18 inch or something
It can either be battery operated (yea right) or AC DC...either one works

Can anyone reccommend a good heater?
Just need to raise the box temp to a good 80-85 degrees
Thanks in advance

does an aquarium heater (intended to heat water) work?
its gotta keep the inside of a cardboard box consistently at 80-85
thanks

If you place a heater in a glass pickle jar or similar full of water, it makes an effective space heater. Seal the top of the jar to stop evaporation and add some iodine or h2o2 to keep things clean.

Perhaps if you put a blanket over your box to help stop heat escaping.... (My 2c)

thats awesome man, thanks
where does the h202 go, inside the water? spray it around the jar/area?

h2o2 in the water in the pickle jar (just to stop contams growing in it...).  I've been told that iodine is a better path to the same place too...  (h2o2 breaks down quite quickly, iodine doesn't)

As a disinfectant (spraying it around) peroxide isn't what you want.  H2o2 stops spores from germinating, alcohol or bleach kills the nasties (do a search regarding this...  if you're gonna make your own disinfectant sprays, you wanna get the mix right  )

k, hate to be skeptical and neurotic with the reassurances
but do you really suppose the aquarium heater/jar technique will raise my temps to 80-85 degrees
its currently at 60 degrees...

i've never owned fish or tank pet before, so maybe i just dont know the power of aqua heaters. But if you could give me some reassurance that'd be great.
thanks so far, you've been a great help

Build your own incubator, I build my own tub in tub incubator, cost me roughly $25, now my jars are constantly at 85F, saved me a bundle.

Substrate + jars = $20

I like using heating pads. They're only $12 at walmart.

I hate heating pads. I never did find how to get them to give me the correct temperature. Of course if you found a pad that heated to exactly 86 degrees that would be good. Double bin setup seems to be the tried and true standard.

Will a single bin setup with a pickle jar/water heater combo effectively raise the temp from 60-85F I believe was his question.

Indeed it is also a question I would like to know the answer to, as my set up is quite similar and I'm postulating some reconfiguration.

Others have done so successfully... (My advice is 2nd hand, I was going to do this myself and chased down a number of threads)

I ended up going with a big tub in tub with a 150 watt submersible fish tank heater, but have seen the photos of 'pickle jar heaters' of other members who said they do the job just fine. (I just tried to find the thread for you, but couldn't locate it... It's 'in there' somewhere)

Just another thought... He had his thermostat set in-between 2 incubating jars some distance from the radiant heat of the jar...

I'm currently experimenting using lightbulbs as heaters, in my closet.

Right now I've got a total of 31w in there and I want to see what the temp will stabilise at. I've got 11w, 20, 25w, 60w and 75w bulbs to play with :-)
Will report back with results.

lightbulb with a dimmer.
you can add salt or bleach to the aquarium water too.
blankets under the heat pad to buffer the heat. or a dimmer on the heat pad

my foaf uses a light to heatup the inc. and it works fine only thing is that the heat dries up ur jars so its not as good as a tub in a tub with water heater.

Weeeell...  If they want 'next of kin' they can have my brother (He's pretty useless anyway  )

But, seriously...  Yes, it would be a big fucking disaster to be caught growing (as it would for all of us not in Amsterdam).  When shrooms were criminilised here in mid-2002, the 'American Model' was followed (You could expect similar treatment as you would get in the good old "U S of A" )

well good news, i tweaked around with my heater and got it working again
The problem was that i was experimenting with too much heat, and the thing was doing an auto-shut off (fire hazard proof)...
now i got my box at a nice 82 degrees  WOOHOO

btw, i'm using mycobags.  I'll consider posting my proccess in the grow log forum later for yall to see.
And i suppose i shouldnt have to worry about moisture, as the mycobag is a self contained little deal on its own.  right?

thanks again yall
peace

i've used light bulbs, heating pads, reptile heaters(lower wattage than the others.) i found that whatever i used, i had too much variation in temp until i got a thermostat. now it hovers within two degrees of what i set it at:
Greenhouse thermostat with a light bulb:
http://www.northerntool.com/ search for thermostat. $25 for a DIY and $40 for one with a heavy duty cord ready to plug in. A light bulb or 2 in the bottom of a vertical mounted tub. Shelf midway up with cardboard or styrofoam under it to make sure heating is by even convection rather than radiation to the bottom of the box. A small muffin fan will be added soon to keep the temp even.
The heating bulbs in the top incubation box supplied the light for the perlite dual chamber grow box underneath it. Cheap digital thermometer to monitor temp.
I used this method for the colonization chamber and will use an identical one for chronic tek.
(My first stat was a surgically modified aquarium heater. I removed the internal element and soldered some zipcord to it to plug the light bulb into. Just be sure you don't plug in anything that the contacts aren't rated for. I had a heating pad plugged into one and had the perlite grow box sitting on top of it, but i switched to a reptile heater pad. safer.)
