I put my aquarium heater in a shallow pan of water and put my substrate jars in the water to keep them at the optimum temp. If you're going to use it in your terrarium, be sure to keep it submerged in water at all times or it will burn up!------------------ "The door was closed when he came round, but his mind wide open." - The Great and Secret Show, Clive Barker

I bought a cheap ($10) one and it broke. So i got a $25 one that you can set to the exact temp you want and it works great.

I found that using a fishtank heater for a terrarium is a bad idea, doesn't work to well. The doesn't distribute easily, so that only part of the terrarium will actually be affected. This is with a heater in a glass in the middle of the terr. Perhaps if you have a big tub of water that the terrarium (or bottom half of) is submerged in, you can get good results. But its iffy.. Buy a space heater with a thermostat (small types, $25-$50) and if you have your terrarium in a small area it works great. ------------------ The glass is half real.

I put a fishtank heater in a shallow rubbermade box of water, and then set my terrarium on top of that, it seems to regulate the heat pretty nicely.

I too am using a pan + water + colonizing jars. It is working well for me but I must constantly monitor the temp as I bought the absolute cheapest heater and it really is a piece of shit. All in all it's keeping the temp up so I can't complain that much.

Submersible heater are really nice for these purposes, since the trays I've used are too shallow to really mount a regular heater on. They're somewhat more expensive, but not by a lot (~$15), and they consist of a heating tube just like the regular ones and a built-in thermostat. The only thing left above water with these is the cord.

read necronauts reply:i don't place the aquarium heater in the terrarium. You take a rubbermaid container or similar, fill it about 1/2 way full of water. The put the heater in there and put whatever (jars for incubation, terrariums for fruiting) on top of that. The rubbermaid container will distribute the heat pretty evenly, so it works out really well.

It never dawned on me to use the heater OUTSIDE [ie. underneath] the terrarium...duh.The container that I've been using inside [air bubbler jar], is a thin glass vase...it also holds the heater at the moment... I went for over a week with no pinning, but the morning after putting the heater in I got fruiting on almost every cake! It's not too self sufficient though, so I'll probably move it to something underneath the terrarium soon. Thanks all! Peace, Tao of Earth www.technoshaman.org
