The shittiness and bought nature of the Encyclopaedia Britannica is obvious to anyone who does some research
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encyclop%C3%A6dia_Britannica#Dedications

and for the general interest in how it's silly to rely on it for your "answers" to the world without actually DISCUSSING THINGS, which you, like your ilk, CONTINUOUSLY DO. so hence, threads like this appear...periodically, by people who are slightly confused. i'd be confused, too.

2. University level students should use scholarly, or peer-reviewed, sources. Encyclopedia Britannica is reviewed by a board of editors, it is not “peer-reviewed”.

http://reformation.org/britannica.html

Rockefeller Buys Encyclopedia Britannica!!
The Encyclopedia Britannica was first published in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 100 weekly parts from 1768 to 1771. It was then bound into three volumes. This work was planned by a "Society of Gentlemen," composed of three Scots: editor William Smellie, who wrote the principal articles, printer Colin Macfarquhar, and engraver Andrew Bell. It contained distinct treatises and long articles but also included definitions of technical and other terms in alphabetical order. These general characteristics have been retained in each of the successive editions since the 18th century. The second edition, published between 1777 and 1784, also in weekly parts, was eventually accumulated in 10 volumes.

The last free independent edition was the 9th Edition published from 1875 to 1890

There was no 10th Edition of the Encyclopedia. Like the Titanic, it must have sunk while making the crossing of the Atlantic....The Rockefeller syndicate came out with the 11th edition around 1910.

By 1900, the Encyclopedia had left Great Britain to seek its fortune in the New World. But guess what? Cambridge University in England now does the editing. There was no warning about this chicanery in the 11th edition. This proves that "SCHOLARS" can be bribed by Rockefeller money just as well as oil refiners, railway owners, and politicians.

Cambridge University was once a bastion of the Reformation. William Tyndale -- the father of the King James Bible -- was a student there.

^ the more you know.

they were bought out, and replaced with editors from Cambridge, you ever hear of Cambridge Analytica?

have you? do you know anything?

no, you don't even know WHO YOU ARE DEFENDING.

(Stanford at least uses PEER-REVIEW, which can STILL be biased, but less biased then a Star-Chamber bought by bankers!)

PS: last post was edited, i'm posting the relevant info here if anyone wants to ACTUALLY ADVOCATE FOR SOMETHING, and DEBATE, rather than just stick one's head in the sand.

that should be much easier to analyze than the relatedness of the water cycle, the life cycle of corals, the melting of polar ice-caps, the reflectance of the atmosphere, photosynthesis, combustion, oil, and coal formation, the geologic record, the loss of species over the last 20 years in comparison to any previous period in history or geologic records, how agriculture and industry put stresses on these natural systems, and how humans can modify their carbon footprints

:blah:

humans exist. the earth deals, and animals don't care. they aren't stupid enough to think they can logic their way out of having to accept the existence of other forces than themselves, which are more prevalent and thus need more resources, and room, to live. plus, they actually don't fucking care. or...are you gonna show me scientific proof that they care?

warming trends are cyclic
http://ossfoundation.us/projects/environment/global-warming/natural-cycle

and it what we are seeing - if we are seeing a "cooling trend", that's because of the cyclic nature of the waning & waxing of pressure systems, hence the very nature of it's cycling, which the Poles contribute to in their being MAGNETIC POLES.

the poles have "flipped" before causing havoc...did modern industry do that, too?

no.

the water cycle? what about it? 10 billion people on the planet...industry is needed...ergo, what can you functionally do about whatever issue you even have? you want to stop pollution...start be getting rid of the biggest contributor to C02 in the environment, Cows. alot of killing to do, better snap to it.

the geologic record? what about it? it tells something about what we can do to help 10 billion people how to live with out energy from coal?

species have been lost at record rates, recently? how does this even relate? how do you know this isn't even common- how far back do the Zoological records, go? not far, not more than a few hundred years, at best, in it's contemporary form.

agriculture...god, I had to stop an bask at the sophomoric nature of this statement including this term. yes, agricultural shift changed the face of the planet, since it's inception millenia ago. AND SO? what, when we need it MOST, with the population we have, we just what? STOP? what's your suggestion about the natural process of cultivating the land for the survival of the species- which we've been doing for longer than most creatures remain non-exinct. what do you think?

coal formation? what about it? WE NEED ENERGY TO EVEN RESEARCH ALTERNATIVE ENERGY.

life cycles of corals? again, uhhh...what does this have to do with SURVIVAL?

my last comment in response to yours here because you are not fair to the facts:
ad hominems (@britannica &  @encyclopedia) to discount known scientific facts
clever seeming word origin play to support political skewing
cherry picked obscure sources to bolster weak arguments
isolated crackpot scientists raised to authrotity
erroneous interpretation of the meaning of climate cycles

Nature is a highly respected journal, and the other source i gave was from the website run by this guy, John P. Reisman, who authored this book

https://www.amazon.com/Exposing-Climate-Hoax-About-Economy/dp/0983923108

he doesn't deny climate change and debunks both conservative and liberal ill-logic but, you know, you're the expert and all, of all the sources in the world.

[the reviewer account info attests that this is reliable for climate change advocates, as well "hoax deniers". so please. SAVE IT, and actually provide rebuttal, and stop scuttling away.

again, this is why you should rebuttal instead of appeal to incredulity. Nature is a respected (if not one of the top) journals in natural sciences.

Nature, the journal, disagrees with you.

wrong. you aren't really saying anything here, but, wrong. the current "crisis" is exasperated and you haven't proven anything, but i have.

FWIW nature is far more reputable than brittanica any day.

Britannica is basically useless to anyone looking to support an argument. Regardless of the debate bringing brittanica as a source to the table isn't a good play.

Like I said earlier, I'm not skeptical that humans should do a better job, but I'm sceptical at how crap some of the sources climate change zealots use. And the fact that X amount of scientists agree is also an extremely weak argument.

anyway, I guess this document has a good view on Trump's full position on climate change.

this is an interesting page,
however it brings to fore the fact that we actually do not completely understand about
weather
climate
reflectance of CO2 in the upper atmosphere
etc.
However, we do know enough about it to see (well known since 1973 when it was taught to environmental studies students (incl. me)) that atmospheric CO2 is causing global warming, and the seas are rising as the icecaps are melting and it makes more sense to do something about it now than wait until we know more which will probably be when it is too late.
There is no downside to reducing CO2, to consume less frenetically and waste less abundantly.

These are sane approaches to life, and a good policy towards planet preservation.

If anyone is uncertain about Climate Change, and if the scientific literature is not 100% compelling to them, I advise them to err on the side of caution (i.e. reduce carbon footprints) rather than erring on the side that makes things worse.

I read that Trump is trying to have a seawall built in Ireland (?) to protect one of his golf resorts against rising sea level. He knows there is climate change, he simply lies to empower the fossil fuel moguls. He talks absurd shit about "electromagnetism" as if he knows what the word means (e.g., talking to a Naval commander about his nuclear-powered craft, like we should have coal-burning submarines. ) He is a prime example of simply wanting to pull out all the stops to feed his greed. He cares nothing for anyone but himself. The relationship with his wife is anything but caring and he seems to be an entirely absentee father. If he cares not for the mother of his son or his son owing to his off-the-scale narcissism, he doesn't care about his own health either. He is obese, he eats McDonald's cheeseburgers while lying in bed, his golf game requires that he ride around not walk. He could not possibly care about the ecology of our universal biosphere given these personal proclivities. After all, he is an abysmally petty man.

OK, there are other climate deniers but they take their lead from lying pundits' as well as the lying moron Trump who calls climate change a "Chinese hoax," and who is too stupid to learn the difference between climate and weather. But the obvious thing lies with the word denier which is denial. It reminds me of the anti-tobacco videos I'd show the kids I worked with for 27 years. Often the kids in the vids would be introduced to adults who were terminally ill from smoking-caused diseases and they'd shake their heads and say "That's not gonna happen to me." Look at Yoko Ono, a lifetime smoker who says that she's not going to get cancer because she eats a macrobiotic diet. She may not get cancer but it's not gonna be because of her diet, and that's just denial plus rationalization.

Religion does play a role among those people who are biblical literalists, whose cognitive abilities have never attained to Formal Operational Thinking but who are forever stuck in Concrete Operational Thinking. They cannot think about thinking. There is no reflection, no capacity for abstraction, very little if any critical thinking ability at all. These people are not making a sacrificium intellectus, they have little intellection to begin with and have a childish 'belief' regarding the biblical saying, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth" - Genesis 1:26. Unfortunately, most people construe dominion for domination, and the planet has been dominated to the point where extinction of species has begun. These people do not understand that we are but another specie on the same planet and we do not have preternatural or supernatural status above the other creatures of this world. The poor bastards in their snake-handling Ozark churches don't matter much, but the same attitude prevails among the titans of industry who trophy hunt for fun - the really evil humanoids who are pulling out the stops and setting any ecological progress back half a century.

Denial, Rationalization (God is in charge and He'll protect us), Repression (pushing the scientific truth out of consciousness), and Reaction Formation (poo-pooing the actually grave situation we are in and adopting a sunny if not dismissive attitude towards 90+% of climate scientists), Displacement (Trump blaming climate change on the Chinese as a hoax), and possibly some other defense mechanisms are in play. But these are the falsehoods by which people continue to act as if resources on earth (including, air, water, uncontaminated soil) are limitless. They say "You can't fix stupid," but by God this better be wrong or the whole world is gonna become some dystopian Soylent Green nightmare faster than anyone but the creators of that film ever feared.

oh yeah? look at this dumb shit

"Nature Trumps Walls"

yeah, this is what idiots have resorted to.

oh look, here's the actual reasoning why, instead of some trumped up lies...huh! crazy world (does anyone actually think that anymore, considering people just love to take to crazy like it's a fucking tit, and they're a babe)

“In the long run, the wall could actually lead to complete beach loss, meaning that the wide public beach you see today would be completely submerged,”

says Nick Mucha, director of some nature organization.

monetary incentive, for the win.

now did Trump ACTUALLY cite that the wall is for "rising sea level". nope. it was his company, that did so, and it also considered soil erosion and increased Atlantic storminess, among other reasons.

DO YOU know the difference between Weather, and the Climate? can you discern what the precautions are for? can you really actually say for sure it's one and uh not the other? are you a mind reader, per chance?

Re: The psychology of climate change denial [Re: bodhisatta]
    #25654089 -

well this isn't a thread about climate science per se, it is about the psychology of denial of climate science findings.
For that we look at patterns in groups of people that adhere to the notion that the findings are wrong - and what their reasoning about that is related to.
It is seldom do to with something they discovered themselves, something they can see, or something they understand, instead it is usually some broken telephone fragment of a partial fact that someone else mentioned and others believed.

In general the pattern we find is one where fossil fuel energy greed mixed with political manipulations and lack of education plus an aggressive approach to arguing the science using posturing and further denial.

Climate science is big, and it is not a completely closed calculation (like the simpler trajectory of a bullet or a rocket) - it includes fluid dynamics with modeling of temperature, light, reflectance, chemistry and state changes. It also involves projections that incorporate thousands of computations related to carbon fixation and release and the behavior of atmosphere, oceans, jungles, deserts etc. This is not an easy thing to follow especially as many of us are hardly past the middle ages when the world was taken as flat intellectually.

Aggressive argument and inordinate focus on any single one of the computations, can reveal some gaps in certainty, and any gap in certainty about the science is taken as a FAIL in the science by non-scientists, who are motivate to push greedy energy agendas.

Anyone who looks at quantum science, or even ordinary chemistry can agree with this, Uncertainty is basic and has to be worked into the calculations, and this is normal and realistic.

To model weather, we do not follow single atoms and molecules with absolute assurance that we know where they are and what they are doing at each moment, the big weather systems are way too complex for that so we have to model it as fluid systems, and even that is too complex for the average person to develop a considered opinion about.  The best most of us can hope for is a lovely artist rendered animation of what the fluid dynamic will do.

So the psychology of denial of climate change is a luddite rejection of all the issues, and all the people that carry them, the MAGA crew and DT himself have turned their back on wordy and complex aspects of reality - it is a defensive psychology rooted in ignorance fueled by greed and fear.

In his 1990 book Technological Risk, Harold Lewis warned of the risks of global warming. In 2010, after 67 years of membership, he resigned from the American Physical Society, citing what he saw as "corruption" from "the money flood" of government grants related to global warming and called global warming theory, "the greatest and most successful pseudo-scientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist."

I wonder what Harold Lewis thinks about the last few years of coral bleachings and loss of polar habitats for our northern species.
An extinction process is clearly underway due to global temperature rise.
The ocean water moderates the planet's surface temperature, but it is stressed into heating more than cooling, and we deduce that greenhouse gas retention of solar radiant heat is the cause. That is not refuted by an old physicist's rant about grant money.
