Pretty much everyone is joining the party, except the US.  At least the US's most populous state is also joining the party.  :smirk:

China and India are stuck at very high levels. It's not good.

They're doing it to slow global warming.

I would argue that crushing your populace to achieve a lesser magnitude of climate change is unethical -- unless the populace is happy about the plan. From what I understand, around 80% of the French populace is opposed to this tax increase. At this point, it seems like the people are enslaved to do the bidding of Macron and the undemocratically elected EU elites.

If 80% of the people think the tax is unnecessary, it must mean people aren't on board with the strategy of this climate change agenda.

Sure climate change is important, but that doesn't mean we have to tax people to death. Maybe, just maybe, people are fed up with Macron.

Climate change doesn't mean we have to suffer. The leader is simply failing in constructive policy that doesn't squash the middle class.

We are in the process of setting a date of 2040 when all gasoline cars are banned and we also have a law banning coal and natural gas as sources for electricity. Thats sb100. In additionto those we just passed a gas tax increase and car registration increase. The point is to make driving your car so expensive everyone is forced into mega cities with stack and pack apartments. Lots of parallels to frances situation of squeezing the rural white working class. The people have had enough with neoliberalism.

Actually, you just confirmed my point.

Read that from the horses mouth.

One thing few are mentioning is the massive amounts of unemployed economic migrants weighing down the entire system in france. Since 2008 france has taken in 530,000 immigrants. 400,00 in paris alone. They are averaging 550 new arrivals a day. 550 x 365 = 200,750/year. THey cant even work in france with their strict labor laws. Lol.

I clicked the link to AB-1745 and it says the bill is dead.

Again SB100 does not mention gasoline.

You should know better than to cite Forbes by now.  I don't think they've ever written an honest article.

China's population is almost double that of the US and the EU combined.  I've shown before that China's per capita emissions are lower than the EU and MUCH lower than the US.  And India's are far lower than China.

https://climateprotection.org/ab-1745-clean-cars-update/
Quote:
Assemblymember Phil Ting (D-San Francisco), the bill’s author, pulled it for 2018 and will reintroduce it in 2019.

Said Assemblyman Ting, “If we want clean air, we need clean cars. For the sake of our health and our environment, we need to move away from gas-powered vehicles. While we won’t be able to achieve that through AB 1745 this year, California will get there … just as Norway, India, China, France and Great Britain have committed to doing. This is only the beginning. I’ll continue fighting for Clean Cars 2040 because it puts us on a path to a cleaner future.”

We at the Center for Climate Protection thank you for taking action this year in support of AB 1745. Our strategy will now transition from a sprint to a marathon, and we’ll be in touch.

The protests aren’t about denying climate change. They’re about an economic system that continuously punishes the working class instead of taxing the wealthy.

That's what I have been stating throughout the whole thread, maybe you should tell that to the others that were denying that fact.   They were convinced it's about saving the world from climate change.

No, not a single person argued that the protests were about denying/saving the world from climate change.

You attempted to discredit the need for the fuel tax by saying France isn't going to save the world.

The arguments were pretty cut and dry, except when you feel the need to misrepresent them.

The right is trying like hell to co opt the protests as some sort of rebuke against climate change and immigrants but, shockingly, they’re arguing in bad faith.

No, you stated that the tax proposal was about "transition of technology", not economics.

I think pain was the intention of the tax. The idea is to spur a transition of technology, especially to more efficient homes and electric car technology. If you look at the links I posted above you'll see EV's are starting to sell rather well.

But isn't calling out the rationalization of "climate change" for the taxation on the peasants an important part of rejecting the proposal?

Are the scare quotes necessary?

The point is the right is trying like hell to change the narrative from class struggle (poor being burdened while rich skate free) to demonization of socialists/liberals/immigrants/climate change.

If you want to interpret the protests as a refutation of Macron’s wildly unpopular neoliberal agenda, you’d be right. But don’t pretend the French are protesting to deny climate change, rebuke immigrants, or promote right wing nationalism.
