I've always been under the impression that you can't clone a clone...it doesn't work out well.

I have in the past, the only thing different that I noticed was the fruits stop producing spores. But I didn't really go much deeper into it than that. I don't anymore cuz people say not to clone a clone.

I guess it can be done just maybe not done often?

I'll be honest...I've never tried it

Yeah there's so many mixed reviews on it...I might give it a try

Now that we are talking about it I am going to try it again, got some Mazatapec fruiting now, some aa going to be popping up shortly, let try some science.

Noob question that I think is related: how is cloning a clone different from simply maintaining an isolate?

I bought a Stamets book a while back that I only skimmed. I should probably go back and read it now.

I get that you will have diminished yields over time if you keep cloning, but how bad does it diminish?

Yeah.. I've done it a ton before, way back in the day. It can go quite a few clones of clones before weakening a noticeable amount.

While a completely different subject, cloning marijuana is the means by which you increase potency, though you may begin to sacrifice some yield.

I used to grow hydro in Michigan’s UP when I was in college. That’s where the Northern Lights strain was developed (Escanaba).  The special batch was Northern Lights #5, which was the fifth generation clone from the mother. Generations 2-4 (the mother plant is gen 1) were strong, but that fifth gen was the sweet spot, and could cause closed eye hallucinations. Unfortunately, the yields and potency began to decrease with every subsequent generation away from mom.

Are mushrooms similar?  By cloning the best producers, and strongest mushrooms, wouldn’t you get an initial bump in strength and productivity?  You are isolating the genetics for those qualities in at least the first two generations, I’d think that the clone of a clone would be stronger in both growth and potency for at least a couple of generations.

Plant genetics don't apply to mushrooms.
Escanaba is such a black hole these days :undecided:

The only time cloning a clone makes sense is when you done fucked up royally and lost the culture and need to get it back

It wasn’t exactly a shining city on the hill while I was at Tech and Northern during the early 2000s, either. Nice to know some things never change.

As to the genetics: Plant genetics can definitely be applied to anything else with DNA. The first genetic experiments to be published were done by Mendel with pea plants. Humans have been genetically manipulating livestock and crops in a semi-scientific fashion as long as they’ve been breeding the biggest and strongest males and females.

It might be difficult to select for potency, since you have to destroy the sample during the test, but it should definitely be possible to alter any variable you can objectively measure via clone selection.

I’m going to do some research because you obviously have more experience than I do with mycology, but I think that we can improve a fungal strain the same way we do seeds. Isolate a strain, clone it and select for the best performers, then clone them. Pick the best performer from that third generation, print it, and in a greenhouse setting with plants, or at a cattle sale, that print would be considered “improved stock” and sold for a premium.

You know, you'd expect that shit to have happened by now.. People always keep the most potent clones. Tons of generations were made to make the mushrooms so stable today. If we could steadily increase potency, that shit would have been done by now. Instead, we all seem to agree that spores means basically a restart. Some spore pairings will be very potent, whereas others will be shit. Since a speck of spores can result in millions of germinations, its impossible to specifically choose spore pairings that are most potent.

With all fungi mushrooms included best performance is obtained by keeping the original cultures and keeping your growth fresh.

Sometimes the exact opposite is true for plants.
